Another Jaco question

Am trying to learn how to play Chicken. The notes are not a problem. But it doesn't sound like Jaco (surprise surprise) in terms of getting the groove "texture". I guess that comes with years of playing and feeling.

Specifically, when he hits the low F, he makes the note swell up and fade fast. How do you do that? I've tried muting and plucking and then pressing the fret and then lifting the finger up real fast, but fail.

I would agree that nuances like that come with years of playing. However, I'd say that just by paying attention to that, you're on the right track.

Which recording of "The Chicken"? But it sounds like left-hand control of the sound is at play here, and that's something you can work on, and it works even on a fretted bass. Is the recording you're listening to Jaco on his fretless? That's where your left hand becomes even more involved in the creation of sound. Experiment with different left-hand pressures, attack and release, etc.

And I agree that the very fact that you're tuned into those nuances is a good sign that you're on the right track!

Tks for the encouragement. I am working various left-hand techniques like muting and ghost notes and whatnot. But I just can't seem to get the definition in the groove. It's like my bass (J Bass MIA 2006) is drunk and slurring.

I'm just wondering to what extent this is my playing and to what extent this has to do with gear/setup. Am guessing its the former.

Anyone know any links to sites with good grooving exercises (involving lots of muting etc.).
