Greetings everyone. My name is Scott, I am 36 and live in Oregon, I am .............. ok yeah. I have always wanted to learn an instrument but never did. My ears seem fixated on the bass guitar. When I see a band play live I seem to fixate more on the bass player. Last night I was looking bass guitars online. I had been researching Basses under $400. I came across a Yamaha TRBX304 and after watching some YouTube videos on it I decided to order it. I can't wait until it arrives.

Welcome! OK, this is really weird... my brother in law's name is Scott Burnham. He lives in Vermont, though. For a moment I thought he had gone and taken up bass without telling me.

Yamaha is a great bass, you should enjoy it. I don't have a TRBX304 but have tried them out in stores and it's a good piece of work. I have a Yamaha BB415 and it's an absolute keeper. What are you getting for an amp?

Thats awesome! But I have never been in Vermont. As for a amp I am going to use a old Yamaha F20 amp. Several years ago a friend that played bass left it at my house and forgot to pick it when she moved away.

OK. That's a guitar amp - don't crank it, they're not really made for low bass frequencies. It will do for you just to hear yourself until you can get a bass amp. Unless it's an F20b, the bass version.

20 watts is fine for practice. My practice amp is a Peavey Max 15B. As mentioned you'll want something with that B notation - for bass. My Peavey has a built in tuner, which is nice and seldom found in the inexpensive amps. It'll go for around $120 US. I also play a Yamaha. Does everything I ask of it. The amp you now have will get you going, but, do work toward getting a bass amp - there is a difference.

Couple of months with a live instructor is the best way to get started, however a lot do teach themselves. A great get started book is Bass Guitar for Dummies. No pun intended, it'll start you off with how to hold it, how to get sound from it and the visual patterns are some of the best out there. Wow I had no idea that amp wasnt a Bass amp. My friend used her bass with it all the time back then. its the amp she packed around with her to work and friends houses. I already plan to get a combo amp here in a few months, maybe a Hartke or a Orange. Then later on build a bigger rig but I don't want to get ahead of myself. All I care about really right now is learning the basics, and a hell of alot of practicing. Thanks for your help and advice.

You'll need a bigger amp when you start gigging. That's at least a year away. Relax and enjoy the journey.

The amp had been out in the garage for several years. I brought it in and stripped it apart and went through it and cleaning it. I made a mistake on a earlier post. The correct model number was F-20B so it's actually a bass amp after all. I am looking into take lessons. Even thought there are so many resources online for learning bass. I plan on taking a few lesson for some good direction.
