German factory bass. Looks like mine, which also has a fake-flame neck which some say is a Hofner thing. If it's healthy it's probably a sturdy, decent-sounding instrument and the price is right, especially considering he's a motivated seller.

The faux flamed neck is definitely a Hofner thing. They are pretty good basses, but I noticed that on the back of that bass there is no crest. This is generally a sign that it is top of line of that company or line. The pictures are pretty bad, but you should bring a luthier with you and check the bass out. I've been told that some of these old school basses can retail up to $3,500. Perhaps you could flip it and get something better with the money made.

PS: If you see the bass, look on the inside, and tell us what it says. If it has a simple sticker staying "Made in Western Germany", I'd put my money on Hofner.

Looks like a Hofner to me and it looks like it could be a deal if you're in the market for a plywood bass. Plan on a bridge with adjusters, a decent set of strings, planing the board, adjusting the sound post and some general setup tweaking to get it singing.

Thank you guys so much for your input. And yes, it has a sticker that says "Made In W. Germany". So it means it' s not a Hofner right?

Oh, well. I just hope that I can buy this one. Hopefully nobody would jump on this before I do. It happened to me many times before after posting an ad...

Probably a Hofner or similar. Heinls imported them from Germany into Canada. Really solid basses generally with a good sound. I had one several months ago and it was a good bass.

My Hofner has a sticker in it that says 'Made in Western Germany'. Coupled with the faux flame neck and the shape, I'd definitely say Hofner.

Most importantly, take your current instrument for comparison!

There is something to say about playing it on a somewhat empty stomach, eating and then playing it again.


Make sure to get some mileage out of it either way! 5 hours is a damn long drive!
