Another police thread

I was just kidding there. I honestly don't know how many Brits would understand the phrase. I'd guess most, except for maybe OAPs ("seniors"). The cultures get so intermingled.
Back in the day, our version would be "lobbing the V sign" (people would actually call it that, in speech). But that's less widely used now here and I'm sure would be incomprehensible to most people outside the UK.
Well, lobbing the V sign seems apt. I dont know the etymology behinf "flipping the bird" it doesnt make much sense to me.

Emmett Grogan explained the origin of the hippy peace sign is his great book "Ringolevio" - but he was a terrible liar and I wouldn't take it as anything other than apocryphal.
Actually, I believe "flicking the V" is done with back of the hand towards the recipient, opposite of the peace sign!
Well, I know that, but Id wager the average American doesnt.
And the other one doesnt necessarily require fingers, but theyre useful.
I've had experiences and known police officers who range from good to bad, and everywhere in between. Probably just like any other profession. Not all mechanics rip you off like people think. So not all LEO's are wonderful, not all are bad.
Unfortunately, I've known a few who became police because they felt it would give them power and control. I've known others who did it because they wanted to help others, so that's a good thing, because we need them and they provide a necessary service.
Realistically, do you really want all your police to be "supernice" people? If they have to do deal with the scary ones in our society, shouldn't they be equally scary (or have the ability to become that)? It's just a thought I've had over the years.
With regards to the sacrifice....I kinda think this way;
They knew it was a possibility going in. One they accepted. Lots of jobs have risks, some more, some less. In my profession we have a tremendously high rate of lung cancer and mesothelioma due to the different asbestos insulations, chemicals, and materials that have been used in HVAC over the years and we often breathe....in many cases not knowing it. Yeah, it's not likely that I'll be shot in the face while on a job.....it's far more likely I'll die a slow and painful death not being able to breathe after years of working to help all those homeowners and office people comfortable in their nice, climate controlled environments....but it's a risk I accepted and I don't think anyone is going to "honor me" for keeping them warm or cool or acknowledge what my "sacrifices" were.......because being an HVAC or plumbing guy isn't glorious or notable. So that whole thing doesn't influence me.
But as far as their characters, you're going to find all kinds, just like any other job.
For those who do it and do it well, you have my appreciation because you work to keep the nasty ones away from my family.....it's a tough job, I'm sure.
