I have a Peavey 500BH, 210 watt 2-10" powered cab. It is supposed to be bi-amped for bass with a recomended crossover of 250hz to 500hz. My question: does this unit only handle frequencies above this range because of the speakers, or because of the amplifier. Would full range speakers allow it to handle bass by itself, or is it destined to be what it is because of electronics. The specs on it say the frequency response is 20hz to 20khz @200 watts into 4 ohms. I am looking at Blue Marvel® Pro 1056-8 Ohm Bass Speaker on the peavey web site and it says; Usable frequency range: 40 Hz ~ 4 kHz. From what I can gather, the Scorpian speakers that are in it have a range of 80 hz to 4 khz. It appears the cabinet has the range to handle down to 40 hz, but doesn't have the speakers to do it. Would that additional 40 hz offer much improvement to the low end of a 4 string?

another powered cab question

I actually had one of these years ago. After I upgraded amps, I unbolted the power amp and took it out. Then, I used the cab as a stand-alone. Worked okay for low/mid volume gigs and practice. I don't think that you'll have any problem doing the same. I did, however, use it mostly as bi-amped top.
Probably the speakers and the box combine to make great bass an issue. That's a tiny box, and not ported, I think. You'll likely have trouble finding anything that will develop decent LOW bass in a box that small, I'll wager. I could be wrong on this part, tho. Hopefully, one of the many of the experts will chime in. Once you remove the amp, there's dang little space in the cab not taken up by speakers. Not enough space for the speakers to "breathe" and work for great low end.
IIRC, those speakers have a sorta funky shape on the frame. Square-ish, I think. If you put any more in there, make sure they're gonna fit before you buy!
Hate to say it, but you'd be much better off selling that piece AS-IS and using the money plus what you were planning on spending on speakers and getting something else, like a Dr Bass or Avatar (new) or any of the great used cabs you see around here. You'll be a lot happier in the end.
Personally, I think that's a great little-known piece that does a specific job pretty well. But if loud, ballsy, and stand-alone is what you're looking for, that's not the job it does.
