another squier vintage modified review

today i found a vm fretless at a store and i spent some serious time with it. the stock setup was'nt very nice but the staff was very nice and they set it up like i wanted! i plugged it into the same combo amp i have at home so i would feel more at home with it. i have always been a squier player, i had a affinity jazz as my only bass for a very long time and i love squier basses totally.

so here are my first impressions:

>its a good looking bass, the sunburst is kinda dark but very nice. the fingerboard had a epoxy type finish feel to it, which i liked and i bet its strong enough to keep the board safe

>the stock strings really sucked, they had a sticky feel to it due to the moisture they had seen for so long. were'nt very nice to play at all

>the neck felt very different from the affinity series fretted jazz i have, thats because its based on different specs. it was chunkier than the jazz squier necks i had seen before and had a graphite reinforcement strip at the back of the neck.
it "felt" very different when playing too, the width of the finger board at the nut was tinier i think. i a/b'd that along with other fender and squier basses i had around and the vm fretless had a smaller width at the nut. i didnt find it as comfortable but i think that could be just me but for the first time a neck felt very small. or maybe that happened because of the other 5er and wider basses i had just tried

> the tuners were of higher quality than usual on squiers

>the duncan designed pickups were pretty hot and the over all tone had considerable lows, low mids to it.

>the bass had decent "mwah" to it on the higher strings and it was very present and pleasant! i bet after a better more personal setup it would get tons better. so surely its not one of those fretlesses which just dont have the "mwah" thing! :D

over all i liked the bass. the neck would take some getting used to. the only thing is i dont listen to any music which involves fretless playing so feel free to recommend me any such music

Felt like spring today. I dragged my bike through the snow and took a ride. On my way to PA I stopped by my favorite music shop to see if they had any new inventory. I played with almost every bass in the shop. Most needed a decent setup. :( I hate that, hard to tell if you like it or not when they buzz all over. Satisfied my Classic Vibe 60s P is still the bomb, and by far the best feeling/sounding bass, I put my leather jacket on and headed for the door. Wait a minute, there was a jazz bass sitting in the corner. The owner hadn't put it on the rack yet. It was a Squier Vintage Modified, fretted maple. I picked it up. Wow, it felt good. Setup was OK. :) I tuned it up, grabbed a cord and plugged it in. WOW. I think this is going to be my next bass. The range of tones was super, and pups were awesome. The frets felt great. I had a REALLY fun time fiddling around. The owner was pretty firm on his price, he's usually the least expensive by far, but says he has no trouble selling the VM Jazz's, can't keep them in stock.

I had been eying the Classic Vibe Jazz, but I played through an amp twice and the tone simply didn't do it for me. This one did.

Oh my.

Do I really need a new bass????

hmmm.

I just sold my Fender MIM Special Deluxe. I tell ya, the Vintage Modified seems like everything I wanted my Fender to be and more.

Decision time.

A squier with graphite reinforcement sounds a bit odd to me..

It would be odd. I think her refers to the skunk stripe. As to the neck profile, I quite like it, but then I like the jazz width with a little beef to it. Chunkier necks have always felt good to me.

I also absolutely love the VM fretless. If I buy another fretless (Love mx SX jazz fretless too much to have it be one of a kind) it will be a Squier VM fretless!

I just snagged a Squier VM "blonde on blonde" yesterday for ninety-two bucks. It has a few (easily fixed) issues, but what a great bass this is. I needed a backup anyway, and this thing is perfect in that capacity. I agree with the previous poster: the neck is a bit oddly shaped, especially toward the nut. It seems the fretboard is slightly narrower, and the neck is thicker. Or rounder. Or chunkier. Or something. Stock pickups are actually not all that bad, just a bit lacking in the higher register. Sure looks great, too. I swap back and forth during gigs between upright, Lakland fiver and jazz box, so my hands aren't overly particular when it comes to neck shape or size!
