Another Talman TMB100 with a custom pickguard

So this makes two. Understand, it isn't my fault. I am an innocent victim. If people would quit listing them on eBay with minor cosmetic flaws for really cheap, I wouldn't be obliged to buy them. I mean, what if they didn't get adopted? They'd have to sleep out in the cold. That's what I'm telling myself, anyway.

So here's the pair. I wrote about the surf green one a while back. The black one I just got. Tony the Pickguardian made the Mother of Bar Stool guards and they're both terrific. I really like the black and white tuxedo look.

I'm a big fan of these basses. Possibly the best $200 instrument out there. If you don't know, they all have the same tort pickguard. It works with some colors, but I like white pearl.

This violates my "two of the same kind" rule, but oh well....I suppose they are different colors. Yeah, that's the ticket.

And now they've come out with a five string. What, I'm supposed to NOT look at eBay? Sheesh.

The Talman I have has been modded but the "base" bass is a player. Really nice neck for an inexpensive bass.

Tony does great work. Tune one BEAD then you'll have two different basses.

I saw one of these in a local music store today, though I didn't get a chance to play it. The cream colored TMB100. For the price, I might have to pick one up if the feel and tone are right.

I need a white pearloid pickguard for an Ibanez TMB100 like these, where can I get one for a reasonable price?

I actually bought the TMB310 with the turquoise sparkle finish. Once I changed the strings and set it up, it looked, felt and sounded beautiful. Stock strings are bad, .... not smooth at all and buzzy. I have one issue though. The coil tap switch is placed where, if you slap, your hand will hit and it can be painful. The TMB100 has no coil tap, so no problem with those. So, I unscrewed the coil tap and tucked it under the pickguard, leaving a funny looking and feeling empty slot in the pickguard. I am now looking to get a new white pearloid pickguard made without the coil tap slot to replace the stock black one. I think it will look and feel better. I love the dual single coil bridge pickup. These have great necks and very high output electronics. As usual, Ibanez offers amazing value for your money.

I had a custom white pearloid pickguard made for my Ibanez TMB310. It looks great and I dealt with the issue I had with the coil tap switch being badly placed by having the switch installed close to the volume and tone knobs. Have a look.

No. I contacted the fellow from Pickguardian and he quoted. But my local tech guy, who fixes my instruments when needed, turned one of my 6 string basses into a fretless etc. actually knew how to do it, so I paid him to make the pickguard for me. The black one looked okay but the pearloid makes a huge difference in the look of the bass. Those photos aren't that great. The bass looks much better in person. The main issue for me though was the badly placed coil tap switch. Ibanez should change that. Placement of that switch on the TMB300/310 will be a major problem for any player who has any slap chops. It's not an issue on the TMB100 though because there is no coil tap switch. I tend to actually run the bridge pickup in single coil mode like the TMB100. I love the sparkle finishes on the TMB310 though. It's a very Bootsy Collins looking bass.

these are beautiful basses....nice move on the white pearloid guards. big improvement. i've got a TMB30 that i had Tony make an off-white guard for. looks great. i just ordered a black TMB100 with the tort guard, which looks ok.....nothing wrong w/that combo, but i'm wondering...does anyone know if the TMB30 and TMB100 guards are interchangeable?

Mr. and Mrs. Talman. the black/ w salami pickguard is a TMB100, and the ivory is a TMB30 /custom guard by pick
guardian. considering putting a matte black guard on the TMB100.

My TMB100 really came to life when I put flats on it. Now I see I need to further enliven it with a different pickguard. You know Ibanez has to be selling tons of these things. Mayhaps they'll eventually broaden the pickguard options.
Pie in the sky......... at least it's low caloric.

I've always wondered about why these guys bulit such a nice line of basses but decided to put those unappealing tort pickguards on them. Then, I found out it was because the people at Ibanez check out Talkbass daily to discover popular trends. They were obviously influenced by all those "Give me tort or give me death!" and "Does anyone know where I can get a fort toilet seat?" threads.

My feeling is they won't, because they don't need to. After all, they're selling tons of them already, so why bother.
