another thread asking recommendations for a specific preamp

Hi,
I‘ve been using Shift-Line Olympic MKII tube preamp for almost two years now. Very satisfied with its sound, small footprint and connectivity, not so much with its versatility. For those who don‘t know it - it has a single 12ax7 tube controlled with Gain, Treble and Bass (BOOST only) and Middle (CUT only), Bright switch and a Master knob (however this doesn‘t affect DI out signal, only 1/4" out). Additionaly it has phones and aux ins outs and an FXs loop.

It is fine when playing jazz standards and blues, however I would need more EQ and gain/saturation tweakability for pop and rock songs we play later at night. That is why I would prefer to have a footswitch with a good tube drive simulation and an active EQ.

Sadly I have a limited budget (max 350€/$), so preferably would buy second-hand.

I‘ve searched many websites, but didn‘t find anything suitable to replace my small reliable Olympic. Only exception might be Ampeg SGT-DI, that oone might be actually ideal, however it‘s too expensive and imposible to buy used.

Do you guys have any recommendations on a preamp that would have Olympic’s advantages (quality sound and build, small footprint, connectivity) and match my versatility needs? Thanks.

PS: I know there already is a plethora of preamp threads here, I‘ve read a lot of them.

Are you wanting to replace the Olympic or just get something to go along with it. If something to go along with it, there are lots of options for drive pedals that have EQ and blend and some of them don't have a huge footprint. You could run it into the Olympic and set the Olympic flat and take advantage of the tube goodness and other attributes that pedal has for you.

I would like to replace it, cause i want it to be doing versatile preamp things, not just use it as a tube DI.

From what you describe this Shift-Line Olympic sounds like an Alembic F1-X preamp in a small box. The DCX Bass is transparent and reactive to your playing and can be extremely subtle to very nasty in a good controlled way. It should be in your price range from the good folks at Origin Effects in the UK.

Use it with the Olympic...

I do understand your potential unease, after two years of using something. I'm not recommending you jump to another single or dual channel preamp. I have access to additional EQ on the OPUS IR Loader (or the prior C.A.B. M+) as well. An EQ device EWS BMC could go in your effects loop, too. ($189.00 USD)

If mid control is all your after, perhaps an EQ of some sort is really the solution beyond your just tired of the Olympic.

If I used it together, it would mean i have a preamp combo worth of 500+$, could buy ampeg sgt as well...
Same goes with using another quality EQ, although I would still miss footswitchable saturation.

Why do you think it's not a good idea to choose another preamp?

I noticed you have the ReVolt, how do you like it?

The one you have is really nice. Augmentation seems like the path of least resistance to me. ;)

I had to change the very nice Psvane 12AX7 to a 12AT7 to tame it a bit. I used an NOS 60's AMPEREX (Mullard-Blackburn) ECC81 and have more headroom, later breakup and a smoother overall sound. The #3 Channel is now useable for myself. (It's just off the hinges with the 12AX7!)

I will not be changing preamps again. You can get the OPUS + ReVolt for +/- $650 USD. For everything it can do, I need no other preamp.
