You're not going to hear good music* on the radio. "Underground" music, or music with a smaller mainstream appeal, is where you're going to find a lot of talented musicians.

Saint Andrew's Hall in Detroit and the Crofoot in Pontiac are two good places that I visit.

Check out your local music scene. :)

*personal opinion.

...Oh and the term "anti-American" bugs me. I'd use "non-American." ;)

Awesome. Been a huge fan since I saw him in an RSL in a small Nth NSW town in 01. About 20 poeple there to start but it filled as more heard the music and drifted in.
Grnad National is JBT's best work; hardly ever out of the CDP.

Read about a Texas band called Grady and am going to order their CD next pay.

You and I would get along very well. ...except for Spoon, can't get into them for some reason. I'd probably leave my girlfriend for Joanna Newsom. (just kidding....i think)

Buck 65 is pimp, Ill Scarlet is lame.

Those bands are all over the musical map.

What you could/should do, is find out who the bands you like tour with. Most bands play with similar bands.

Hey Kieth, you ever heard of the Cetan Clawson Revolution or the Hard Lessons?

They are both out of Detroit and I've had the good fortune to play shows with them over the summer, they are both pretty sweet bands.

I tend to agree with the thread-starter... Beeing at the metal part of the spectrum, I observe almost no solid releases in the US in the past decade. Most stuff labeled as "metal" coming from America is sold-out nu-metal trash with the guitars downtuned enough to attract kids at the mall (or some less-known bands trying to simulate them).

I tend to find good American metal bands on the progressive side of the genre, which is surprising, 'cuz I don't dig it. Dream Theater and Spastic Ink come to mind at once.

I'm not convinced it's only American music that sucks lately. But totally agree with your observations about it getting lame. I'm thinking the mainstream stuff started going down hill since the early 90's.

I started to dig for new stuff to listen to and lately it's been soul music from the 70's. Over here it's a little harder to learn about and find etc as most stations here are only about playing the same 3 crap top 40 songs each hour.

No offense to Nickelback fans but there's even a station here that the dj's wanted boycott playing nickleback all together. No matter how crap their song is it's guaranteed mass air play. Must be $$$.

I think these days the marketing and so called music experts have really pee'd in their water. What freaks me out is all those "real" talents out there that we will never have opportunity to hear while Britney & Kylie keeps 'em making the bucks from teeny bopper sales.

If so you failed miserably :D :p

But I love Muse, they are amazing. Never listened to the rest of them, but I've heard of Kaiser Chiefs and the John Butler Trio...

Modest Mouse is a cool band, but they are by no means a new band... they have been around since around 1990... they have like 8 CDs out... on further 'research' they have 5 studio albums, have been around since 1993, but they have a lot of other albums... I have 8 myself...

For one, I really really hope Rage Against the Machine starts to make new music... It ONLY makes sense after all... I mean they aren't playing shows very often... so logically they have to be doing something with all that free time... therefore they MUST be working on a new album...

This isn't really a discussion about how any of us listen to music because of what country it is from, but rather how the music we like doesn't seam to be as much from our own country as it used to be (those of us that are Americans that is.)

I understand your point and agree with it whole-heartedly, but I think you might be missing the point of this topic.
