A lot of people - myself included - don't have any problems with most basses because my forearm rests on the lower bass bout, or the round edge of the body nearest the E string saddle (where the bevel is on a Fender bass). Because of this, my forearm holds up the neck by acting as a lever stop.
Certain basses don't lend themselves to this technique well - ABGs, slab-style bodies, some Ibanez models, and so on. That's where I think a device like this would be most useful for me.
I think that everyone has a different way to balance the bass, and trying to "design balance into the bass" might work for some and not work for others. But I'm not a luthier; maybe there's a universal rule that should be followed more often.
I know that Rick Turner's basses are often hollow, and this ALWAYS contributes to neck dive. No matter how you slice it, less mass in the body = higher neck-to-body mass ratio.
