New Zealand is currently working though some anti-smacking legislation. there seems to be a bit of opposition to it though. Personally, I couldn't bring myself to smack a child. But it seems the law may pass at this stage.

I know there are some other countries that have anti-smacking laws. Do you think it's had a affect on violence in society?

Lastly, are you for or against smacking of childern?

I don't understand how hitting your child will teach them something other than "if someone does something you don't like, you hit them". It's especially weird (and very ironic) if you spank/smack your child for hitting someone.

Who decides what is 'smacking' vs. what is spanking? What is the difference? Is one abuse and the other not?

This is the danger in these nanny-state laws, they take the responsibility of parental discipline away from parents and put it under the control of the state. Obviously there should be a clearly defined concept of what is accepted physical discipline (spanking) and what constitutes child abuse. Too often these laws seek to criminalize all physical discipline, which is just plain ridiculous, IMHO.

There was a report a while ago that said the head of every Fortune 500 company had been smacked when they were growing up. Thinking back to the people that I grew up with, those whose parents actually disciplined them are very successful, and those whose parents gave them whatever they wanted to control them are doing pitifully in the real world, because they never earned anything, they just whined until they got it.

I think it's wrong to beat kids, that's child abuse, but I have no problem with smacking a child. My parents smacked me when I was growing up, and I'm happy they did. I did a lot of stupid crap growing up, and if they didn't smack me, I would have kept it up, and done a lot worse.

spank the kids! Kids need to realize that actions have consequences, and some wimpy punishment like 'go sit in time-out' isn't good enough. All time out does is make them bored. If they get spanked they feel the pain that their actions give to other people. My parents spanked me, I'm fine now, and I'm gonna spank my kids.

amen. I was always disciplined as a kid, and as a result I stay outta trouble (for the most part). IMO its really the only way to get something glued into a kids brain. Example: my cousin (he's now 4) had a problem with pinching. He pinched EVERYONE!! and it hurt too (that kid turned it into an art form). Well, his grandparents started pinching him back. Guess what? he doesn't pinch anymore.

I think the actual problem here is way too much government involvement in the individual lives of people. That said, smacking a child is not cool, but I am not against spanking.

I didn't realise there was a difference. Either way - it discipline.

I personally see the results of the sugar induced psychosis every day at work - people refuse to discipline their kids and make my work in the medical area very difficult. I've had 6 and 7 yr olds swear at my face - spit - scream and holler, and the parents simply reply "Don't be silly Johnny"
Show the kids some boundaries.

Personally, I have no qualms about corporal punishment - look at countries like Singapore, where canings and the like are still used as a punishment for crims and vandals. They say re-offending is very low.
Something we could all learn here...................

I've got a five year old son who we've never smacked.

Positive reinforcement and the naughty step (time out) seem to have worked pretty well.

To me, smacking just seems to teach a kid that it's okay to hit someone when they're doing something you don't like.

While I don't think that smacking/spanking a child is the best way to teach them, I don't agree with actually making it illegal. There are a lot of people that demonstrate that is does work (me for instance). I think that there are better ways to do a lot of things, but the "not-as-good" ways certainly shouldn't be illegal. Now child abuse it a totally separate issue and there's already laws for that most everywhere, so I don't see what the problem is.

Carlos Mencia is in fact an expert on child rearing.

I don't think that spanking worked very well on him, based on the material I've seen from him.

You obviously don't have kids, or have some freaky ones that when you are nice and tell them to behave they instantly respond.

The kids you see out somewhere running around crying havoc, yelling and screaming and misbehaving are the ones that the parents were to wimply to lay down the law and spank them. Those kids later become the teenagers causing trouble.

You can bet that when you see a parent tell his child to stifle and he does so quickly, that that parent gives a spanking when the child doesn't listen.

I can't count the number of times I've seen some mother or father yelling repeatedly at their child and the kid just ignoring them and continuing to cause trouble. They aren't adults for christ sake, you can't reason with them. They don't have that capacity yet. You tell them once and if they don't comply the spanking should come.

I don't mean beating. theres a huge difference between beating and simply spanking or taking a belt to an older childs behind.

Mencia may be comedian, but he hit the nail on the head. Spanking teaches kids that bad actions have consequences that they don't like. You can see by the number of young men in U.S. jails the number of parents that did not instill the concept of, "consequences," in their children.

Which is another point. In the adult world if you F up no one coddles you and says, "please don't do that honey." You get the preverbial smack right away. It's best kids learn that early.

Very young kids don't have the mental capacity of adults and will forget things seconds after you tell them. A little spanking makes them remember.
