I would think of it as it possibly be the last bass you ever buy. Take your time, decide what you really want. Play them, consider buying used, and be ready to act on a deal if you find one. Avoid buying a bass because it seems like a step up from what you have. Buy the bass that you really want based on your personal criteria from the get go at a price that you can recover if you should need to. At $800 you have a lot if options on top level used gear if you are patient. Impulse buying can turn into regret very quickly.

Any advice on buying a second bass?

If you have the Squier starter bass right now, I have to disagree with buying a new amp first. I don't know about the one you have, but all of those basses that I've played just play like crap. I'm not one of those guys that are biased against Squier just because of the name, don't get me wrong, I actually really want one of those CV '51 P basses right now. But, if you've only been playing for about 9 months, odds are, you won't be trying to rock a stadium any time soon, so, I say get a bass that you think feels awesome and upgrade your amp when it becomes necessary. Sorry if some of that was OT, but I hope it helps.

and have a killer sound, equipment that will last you a couple years, and STILL have money left over for a case, effects, lessons, or whatever. Dude, if you stick with that Fender Rumble that came with the Squier kit, I don't care what bass you plug into it, it's still going to sound like crap and you'll probably end up quitting before too long. That amp is fine for a small practice amp, but nothing else. It will never hold it's own against any other instruments and that's where you need to go next -- take what you know now and find someone to jam with.

If you are interested I know where there is a BRAND NEW old stock MIA Fender P-Bass (Inca Silver/Rosewood) for $799 and a MIA Fender Jazz Bass (Red/Rosewood) for $899. I am sure the dealer ships and I played both and they are perfect. I decided to go a different direction this time but next time I will be picking up a MIA P-Bass.
