Any Australian fellas on TB?

my family has a farm in gippsland (but gippsland is a very large area) where the fires are but we are very lucky how it hasn't hit us.

i feel for the people that have lost their lives and livelihood over this tragic natural disaster and just to think of it how many of those bushfires are actually caused by fire bugs.

at the moment there is still 30 bushfires still active in victoria

stay safe

It really is a terrible situation. I have a friend who lost his house, all his drums, his home studio but is lucky to have his life. Another friend i studied with a uni lost his cousin; he burnt to death in his house and his uncle is fighting for his life in hospital. House with pets gone... What has been equally amazing though is that so many people are donating, supporting, giving there time and energy. Its inspiring how everyone has rallied around...

Yeah, I live in Kinglake... Not much left really. We saved our home though, the rest of the property and possessions outside are gone.
All our neighbours houses are gone except one just over the hill. I got out of there a couple days ago to take my girlfriend to the airport, and for any people from Melbourne, to get to Yarra Glen where we stayed the night with a friend (usually 15 mins), I had to drive out through Yea, Seymour down the Hume and Tullermarine, down the Eastern then up the Maroondah highway and it took about 2 and a half to 3 hours, thats how bad and wide spread they are.
I can't get back in to see family at the moment but hopefully will tonight.
There's a lot of controversy and anger up there but i'll leave it for another day, we're just lucky to be alive.
If anyone else is in the area, stay safe.

Wow man. I'm pretty familiar with that area and the route you described is crazy! I'm glad you and your family are ok.

I'm interested in hearing if the anger and controversy is over the possibility of the fires being the result of arson, or if it has to do with the handling of the emergency efforts.

Any word on this, guys? I just heard this morning that they have an as of yet unidentified suspect.

Yes, he has been charged with three offenses. Arson causing death, fire lighting, and possession of child pornography. Minimum 25 years in prison for the deadly arson charge, and minimum 15 years in prison for the second arson charge. Don't know about the child porn. He's being kept anonymous because if people were to find out who he is, he'd no doubt be hunted down by hundreds of angry homeless fire victims and killed.

People are pretty angry it seems, with good reason. One town which has seen numerous looters trying to steal stuff now has signs posted all over saying "LOOTERS WILL BE SHOT". People are taking the law into their own hands.

so a max of 25 years + a minimum of 15 the secondary arson charge?
The news outlet that I read about this one was claiming that the suspect was facing a max 25 year sentence for all charges. I found that exceedingly light for something of this magnitude. This now makes more sense.
I'm curious to see the defense though. Accidental? Deliberate arson? We have had a some bad wildfires in California over the past few years, if I'm remembering correctly, one of which was accidentally set by Boy Scouts :eyebrow: Until they were found there was a some talk of terrorism, vigilante justice etc. This will be interesting to see how it plays out.
It's just so tragic though, horrible.
