Any bassists AND drummers in the house??

I am first and foremost a bass player (Idk if I qualify for the -ist title, 7 years and runnin' and no upright experience), but I am also a drummer. I was the drum major in HS band for 2 years and the drum corps captain for one, I fill in equal time in bands as a drummer, and I am a snare drummer for the Oklahoma Scottish Pipes and Drums.

I fully believe that being both really helps one keep that strong rhythm going. Also, it helps having experience to sort of "predict" the drummers patterns and movements visually. Why not be able to hold up both ends of the rhythm section??

started on bass about 5 years ago and was on my high schools drumline for 3 year. tried to make percussion the instrument for my major, but bass kinda shoved it's way in there. time to learn jazz bass and be all professional like

OTOH, I suppose I don't really see many good bassists around, most of those I see don't really put much thought into bass. But the good ones I see are way beyond my level.

I played drums back in high school and college, but it's been a good 20 years since I've played regularly, and the last time I sat down at a kit I was pathetic. So it'd be a bit disingenuous for me to claim that I was still both a bassist & a drummer.

IME once it's known you're a capable bass player, no one cares what else you play.

Drums are great, though. When bassists ask what other instrument should I learn, most folks say piano but I say DRUMS! (That goes for anyone, actually - IMO rhythm > harmony.)

me! me! i've been bassing for about 5 years, and drumming for less than 1.

i'm entirely self taught and thinking about getting lessons for something but i can't decide which would be better. they're both too much fun to play

Piano was very useful to me though, the ability to sightread sheet music has gotten me quite far in a lot of places.

I've found exactly the opposite!

I get more and bigger gigs as a drummer. It's getting to the point where I'm a frustrated bass player! or maybe i just suck at bass...

I'm a crappy drummer, so I barely qualify. Only playing a little while, and rarely gig on it. I would like to do more playing out on drums, but I'm also too lazy to haul around a drum kit.

I'd rather play bass anyway.

This. I started drums when I was 6, and bass when I was 12.

Right here! Started playing bass in high school; going on thirteen years. Picked up a drum kit seven years ago. Discovered how intriguing drums really were to me; I enjoy practicing, even going over rudiments or simple stuff much more than strings. I think my drumming has actually apexed my bass playing as of recent.

Great for recording. We can lay down both sides of the rhythm, eh?
