Any Bostonians here?

The missus and I are going to be paying Boston a visit while we're back in the US for the holidays - she's only ever been there once before, and I've never been there, so can anyone recommend any decent live music venues, guitar shops with a good bass selection or other fun things to do?

Heyyyy,
I live in lexington which is a small suburb about 20 minutes out. It's a nice town and if you recall, it's the "birthplace" of the american revolution. There's a lot of cool history out near where I live (especially Lexington and Concord, MA) if that's what you're into. On the other hand, Boston's got a lot of great restaurants and music. I'm not too knowledgable about the club scene seeing as I'm under 18/21, but in terms of food, the North End in Boston has some of the best Italian food you'll ever have.
Got to go....more later.

I just recently became a Bostonian. I live in the Back Bay, which has a lot of great food and some really good live music venues (Berklee Performance Center :hyper:). Funny, you lived 20 minutes from me when you were in New Jersey. Maybe we can meet up when you're in Boston?

Being a red sox fan, I am regularly in boston at least once a month during baseball season. For normal tourist attractions, I highly recommend going to Quincy Market at Fanuel Hall, the Boston Aquarium, and Harvard Square in Cambridge. All of these are very easy to get to using the "T".

When are you coming and what kind of music are you interested in? There are lots of good places places for hearing music.

As for other fun stuff - history is our strong suit. Most of the downtown historical sites are linked by a painted red line and known collectively as the Freedom Trail. Paul Revere's House, the USS Consttiution, Bunker Hill Monument, Copps Hill Burial Ground, Boston Common, etc.

The museums are first rate - the Museum of Fine Arts is the big one with great stuff from every era.

Good picks... I'm from Boston, too..

Also, Sculler's Jazz Cafe.

Marcus Miller is playing Dec. 1st in Boston, so if you're around, get tix!

Where is Marcus playing on Dec. 1st? According to his website, it lists Dec. 8th as his gig in Boston at Berkley...

Every time I go up there I spend 90% of my time on Newbury St. There's a Guitar Center with some high-end stuff a turn of a corner from there.

The Boston MFA is excellent, as has been mentioned.

Yeah, that guitar center that is on Comm. Ave gets some good stuff seeing as they are near berklee and often get some good used stuff in that gets abandoned by students. You'll find that the T connects all the best parts of Boston pretty easily. If you start out in Cambridge at Porter or Davis Square, you can make your way pretty easily through Harvard and Kendall Square, Newbury St., the Comm. Ave. area, and maybe even copley/prudential. I wouldn't reccommend doing this all in a day and there are obviously many other attractions in the area. Also, don't get discouraged if you ever get lost. Boston's not exactly the easiest city to navigate...

We didn't get to go to Boston while we were over at Xmas, alas... my missus was too busy catching up with her friends in NJ! :D

But, we're seriously considering moving back to the US in the near future, with Boston as a potential destination. We'll probably be back in NJ for a few months with my in-laws, but then possibly off to Boston - from my point of view, there's a good music scene, plenty of tech jobs (even if you're competing with the MIT crowd) and a more European feel to the place than most other US cities... I think I'll like it.

We'll probably be going over there in a month or two to have a bit of a look around, and we could do with some "tour guides"... :)

If/When you do come, let us know. We could have a Boston area GTG in celebration of your glorious presence!
-Alex

I dunno about the "glorious" bit, but that would be fantastic. :D

We'll need a guide to all the best music venues and guitar shops in town, that's for sure... plus I expect my missus will be looking for somewhere nearby where she can go and ride horses. :)
