Any Dick Lovgren/Meshuggah fans?

Herrick is a Meshuggah fan. I was listening to a few of those songs during the end of my run today. I haven't heard Koloss yet...butt I will soon!

Zarathustra3, was there an audible difference in bass tone when he played all those different basses?

Edit: Wait did you say Lovgren tunes a 4-string up a step?!

@Herrick: He plays 5 string dolphins but doesn't use the B string on their 8 string material. Yes he does tune the EADG strings up a half step so his bass, Hagstrom and Thordendal's guitars are on the same octave. They are playing the same note and octave but the difference in tonalities between the instruments is very obvious.

His 2 new Dolphins are definately more poppy with more of a treble/mid range sound to them. From what I could tell he only used his older Dolphins on their 5 string material.

If you get the limited edition of their album "Koloss", it comes with a DVD of them in the studio and Lovgren recording. So you can hear the bass by itself. It's pretty cool. You really don't realize how loud he's turned up until you hear it alone cause when you hear them together you think all the treble is from the guitars, but it's actually the bass that's EQ'd that way.

One the older songs, is the 5-string tuning half a step down from standard? I think the 7-strings were tuned down half a step...at least on Destroy Erase Improve.

I don't really like Koloss that much. And after I got over the shock of how awesome Bleed was from a technical perspective, even obZen started to bore me to tears.

The sizzle they had before they broke out is lost, and in my opinion, it's down to their failure to exploit the bass guitar's sonic contrast with the rhythm guitars. In their older music, you could hear them both equally well, and they sounded different in unexpected ways, and it gave their music a sense of disharmony which really made them different. They still have that discord, but it's not the same. It's serialized, stamped, and sterilized and has become "the djent thing".

They are, of course, still a fantastically talented group of men. I just wish they had retained some of their signature grinding growl from DEI and Chaosphere.

^ Koloss has something of my all time favs on their. "Behind the Sun", "The Hurt That Finds You First", and "Demiurge" are classic, but to each his own. I think bands like "After the Burial" "Periphery" and "Tesseract" are sterilized "djent".

@Herrick. I am 100% positive all of their pre 8 string material was in standard tuning down a half step.

Thanks Zarathustra3 for the info. I saw some discussion about Lovgren's tuning on the 7-string guitar forum but I kept seeing conflicting answers, ha ha! It was always a mystery to me.

I still haven't heard Koloss yet! Hopefully I'll hear it next week. I'm a very lazy music listener. Most of my listening is done while doing other things. I think Meshuggah music needs to be absorbed while not doing other activities. Actually, it's good to listen to while running because running does not require much thought. I can get into a semi-hypnotic trace while listening to Catch 33 & running :cool:

Great band. I seem to enjoy their later stuff the most, both obZen and Koloss are great in my opinion, Those two, and Nothing gets the most play time at the moment. I'm seeing them live for the first time soon, expecting pure awesomeness!
