Really, you can't go wrong with a cheap violin bass!
I play Hofner Icon basses and love them with the light gauge La Bella Beatle flats.
I never GASed for a violin bass either, kind of avoided them, then a friend got an Icon, I played it and tried to buy it from him! He wouldn't budge, so luckily, I got a scratch n dent from MF for $265, it's my main bass now!
