We're all famous to someone.

On the flip side, It can really hurt when someone boos you and tells you to get out. Especially when that person is your mom and you're practicing in your own home while she's visiting

I walked into a grocery store in Montana once and the checker said "Hey, you're in the band playing over at XXXXX's! You guys are great!". She didn't know me, but recognized me. Feels good, but may not be what the OP had in mind.

I’ve worked as a hired gun with some artists that were somewhat successfully, charting in the mid 40’s on the country billboard charts. I’ve opened for some pretty big names in the past, but for the most part that’s past me now.

Fame is fleeting but highly addictive. It’s a stress filled pressure cooker that has destroyed many, but when riding the wave there isn’t anything else like it.

I have friends in the business, still touring and having fun I touch base with every so often, but it’s a rat race I no longer care to run.

I wish those still out there the best. It’s the hardest work but most rewarding thing you can ever experience.

I don't think that the average nonmusician...has a clue as to who Flea is...
when asked to name a famous "bassplayer"...they would quite likely answer....."Mark McGuire".

And I bet a lot of musicians don't realise that Flea is actually Australian born and lived his first 7 years here in Australia before his family moved to New York.

On CL I am famous, I have whole threads in bass humor about my posts.

Guy Pratt (Pink Floyd)
Jay Bentley (Bad Religion)
Juan Alderete (Mars Volta, various)
Justin Meldal-Johnsen (Beck, NIN, etc) has his own sub-forum of course
and Jeff Berlin seems to going great guns at the moment.

a while back there was the guy from one of those big stadium grunge-revivalist bands but I'm totally blanking on the name - not Creed but like them. He had this massive custom bass rig in his avatar.

Here's a little test. Go up to any stranger and say, "Name a bass guitar player." Then think about what you mean by "famous". There are two famous bass players. McCartney and Sting. Most people don't even know they play bass, though. Even Jaco isn't famous. If you seek fame, put your bass away and go do something nasty with the President of the United States. That'll make you famous.

An awful lot of "regular" people knew who Ian (Lemmy) Kilmister was after he was gone. I got a lot of comments about his passing when I was wearing my Motörhead shirts immediately after his death.
Not that he'd be a member of any forum...

Seeking fame as a bass player isn't exactly the normal route, but guys like Frank (Nikki Sixx) Feranna have pulled it off.
I do sometimes wonder if some of the well-known artists browse here for a laugh & just remain incognito.

Almost everyone knows who Paul McCartney is, do they know he play's bass? Nahhhh... And I don't think there is another bass player in the world who is anywhere near as well known as he is..... What's a bass, that guitar with 4 strings? Aren't those easier to play than a guitar? etc. Very few non-musicians know what a bass is or who plays them but a lot of people like the sound of them.
