No one plays bass in popular music anymore - it's all samples and synths now. And I stand by my comment of 18 years ago. In a world of 7 billion people there are essentially no famous bass players.
Go up to any random person on the street and ask them if they've ever heard of you.
The famous bass players are gigging or practicing. The rest of us burn time on TB.
i was famous once. A friend that ended up representing a jazz blues label in the windy city came by my home in indy while playing along with a song on the radio. He sad i dont know what your doing but it sounds way better than whats recorded.
so ends up never got to really play in a band as in the try out the lead player hated me the drummer loved me. but i loved playing so much used to play for hours every day and still do when its warm enough in my shop.

By your criteria, Nathan East is arguably the most famous bass player in the world, ever. Ask anyone (except a bass player) if they've ever heard of him.
Almost everyone knows who Paul McCartney is, do they know he play's bass? Nahhhh... And I don't think there is another bass player in the world who is anywhere near as well known as he is..... What's a bass, that guitar with 4 strings? Aren't those easier to play than a guitar? etc.Very few non-musicians know what a bass is or who plays them but a lot of people like the sound of them.
To your point - just last night at our gig, a girl came up and was requesting us to play something by Journey. First off, we are a Blues-Rock band, but despite that, our lead vocalist (who is also in a Classic Rock band) said he would sing the opening lines to Don't Stop Believin' for her, which he then did. At the end of the lines, where the guitar does the solo line in the song, she looks right at me (holding my 4 string bass) and says "now that's your part"...
I had my moment of fame at a local Wal-Mart one night. It was glorious.

One person who is famous for being a bass player and only a bass player is Bootsy Collins. Even non-musicians know who he is and what he does. To respond to the OP (18 yrs after the fact
) there is no indication he has ever even heard of Talkbass.So true.
As far as I can tell, there are at least three or four famous bassists (as in recording artists with searchable discographies) who have and maybe still do frequent TB. I won’t name them...I’ll let them do that. One was the original bassist for Rival Sons. The other two or three are well known in the genres of pop, hip hop, and gospel. All have at some point or another played with and/or recorded for Destiny’s Child, Beyonce’, Lady Gaga, Mariah Carey, Fred Hammond, Kirk Franklin, and many other recording artists.
The reason I say two or three is that two of them I do not know personally, but I have seen them on TB. The 3rd is a Detroiter. I have spoken to him in general on a number of occasions (acquaintance as opposed to friend and confidante) and he has mentioned seeing stuff on TB, though I am not certain if he is a member.
