any help identifying?

I am very new to the bass - about 1 week in fact - been playing six strings for a while and my brother in law told me to go to my inlaws basement and take his old bass if I wanted it. I did, and it is pretty beat up, missing knobs, cracked pickguard, etc. Can anyone tell me if what it is, if it looks worth investing in some new pickups and a new pickguard, or if I should just leave it as it is, play around with it, and if I like playing the bass invest?

That looks to be a chinese copy of a P-bass plus circa... 1996???

If it plays, great! If not, well - dont' sink money into it.

It is probably just me, but the strings don't look like they sit right in the nut or along the poles of the PU.
As stated, if it plays sure. Don't spend any money repairing it though.

All I'd do to that is clean it up, rack the neck, and put a pair of knobs on it. You'd probably have to get a pickguard custom made, make one yourself, or go through a lot of bs to get a replacement to work.

Racking (shifting) the neck a little will cause the strings to line up better with the pickup poles. Loosen the strings, loosen the neck screws (on the back of the body), try to pull the neck to the E side (like this, \) enough to get the strings to line up, tighten neck to body screws, retune.

There's also set-up forum here with a lot of info on making adjustments. Have fun with it, but really, other than a couple of knobs and some strings, don't waste any money on it (just yet).
