Any hope for authentic Fender Precision?

If someone tried to sell me a "real" Fender USA P-bass for $200, I'd suspect it was a copy, a fake or a scam.

If you want a read Fender bass - buy a real Fender bass (whatever that means, which Fenders made everywhere anymore).

I bought a American standard jazz with case for $200, legit and not stolen.

Hi again guys, i contacted with the guy who sold me the bass. He said the body is a MIM deluxe but the neck is changed and obviously the decals are fake. Although it's a good neck and far superior than a squier. I asked him why he changed the neck and i didn't get an answer, he just told me that he don't know (he bought it from another guy aswell). Anyway, for the record, is there a way to identify if the body is from a MIM deluxe? (The bridge pickup place is a custom made)

Measure the body width, if it's less than 1.75" thick it's probably not a MIM body. If it's the same width it doesn't tell you much.

Check the location of the output jack. If it's on the side of the body, it might be either a Squier PJ or a MIM Deluxe. However, the output jack on the side of the body can be added later so it's not a smoking gun.

You could also take the pickguard off and check the body route. If it has room for extra knobs it might be a deluxe. If it looks more like this, it's not. You don't have to remove all the screws on the pickguard, you can remove them near the control cavity then tip the pickguard up to peak inside with a flashlight or something.

Notice that near pickup the body route comes up higher and would not allow for extra knobs to be placed there. Remember that a MIM Deluxe Active would have 4 EQ knobs for the preamp so it needs more room than other MIM basses that only need 2 knobs and a jack.

Here's sort of what you're looking for, this is a Deluxe MIM P Body :

  • I'd start with the body width measurement, confirm or deny it's a Squier or Import bass.
  • Check the output jack location, if it's on the side it might be a Deluxe. If there is no hole for an output jack there, it's definitely not a Deluxe MIM body.
  • Then check the body route to see if it has room for extra knobs. If it does, it's probably a deluxe.

If all of those signs point to "Deluxe" it's probably a deluxe. I'd call it good there personally, but there is an off-chance it's STILL not a deluxe.

As a final, last resort you can take the neck off and check the neck pocket for any information like a serial number, etc. The reason I say that's a last resort is because it's the one way to check that is the biggest PITA.

@Antisyzygy Thanks for the info, i have measure the width and it's 1.75". Also there is room for another knob. Please check photos aswell for anything suspicious..
