I like the snappy handling on flowy single track and the ability to stomp with authority on climbs. I just try to avoid long, rocky descents on my hardtail.
And yeah, cyclists, especially roadies, are the weeniest of all weight weenies!![]()

Macaroni Tony,
The used bike listed earlier has a hand built custom frame from a local artisan, the frame alone costs $2375

Add the top of the line fork ($800), the expensive wheel set ($600), the gruppo (+/- $500) and you can see I got a great deal for what I paid for it.
It would be like finding a used Fodera, in perfect condition, for sale in the classifieds section of this site for only $2000.
The $500 to $750 price point gets you a great entry level bike, albeit mass produced, that will stand up to actual trail use and be fun to ride. (like buying a new Squire!)
With the discussion about hardtails, I thought that this video was appropriate. The rider's name is Jinya Nishiwaki and he's riding some of the trails in Pemberton, BC. I've ridden some of the stuff in this video and the camera doesn't do the terrain justice. Mad skills.

Nice video ... reminds me of when I was a kid/teen bombing old logging and hunting trails on my cromoly Redline BMX bike. I do miss that extra amount of flex.
... man ... I just dig cromoly, unfortunately the $$ to get a light cromoly bike is out of my reach.
Nice run, nice trail![]()
Don't write off dual suspensions as a wimpy bike. They come with rear shock lockouts so you can kind of get a hardtail feel from them. The XC oriented ones only have a few inches of rear travel anyways. It's not like riding on some squishy downhill bike with a foot of travel on both wheels.I would most likely go hardtail for myself, probably full suspension for the wife. The wife is much, much less hardcore than myself. Cool man! I'm motivated!
You know what is insane? There are literally hundreds of trails like that in the Sea to Sky corridor between Squamish and Pemby, not including Whistler Bike Park. BC = MTB Mecca.
