Any nylon tapewound fans?

I just strung my fretted Gecko with Labella black tape. I just love them! They are fast and finger friendly and sound awsome! Everything from mellow thud to a nice middy honk. Perfect for everyting I play. Rock, jazz, ballads, heavy, everything! I just ordered a set for my fretless aswell.

i bought a bass that came strung with fender tapewounds... really didn't work for me. i play pickstyle full time (in a classic rock kinda way, if that makes sense), and the pick tone with these was just... weird. real "plinky" if i had to pick a word to describe it. the attack was pretty muted, obviously, but there didn't seem to be much fundamental when struck with a pick. fingerstyle they sounded pretty good, reminiscent of flatwounds, though they still felt less present to my ears. i can see where they'd have a place though.

I have the Fender nylon tapewounds on my fretless and I think they have a great feel and tone. They have been on the bass for almost 3 years and aside from the loss of brightness after a they were a few weeks old, they haven't really changed at all.

Does anyone else notice though, that a lot of heat builds up between the string and finger while doing big slides?

I am a recent tapewound convert. But I did not even know there were different brands besides Fender, until doing a TB search.

I bought a set of Fender tapewounds for the fretless bass I am building. (Cy's first build) I have not hooked up the pickups yet but I have had is strung up and I loved the feel and sustain I was getting even without pickups.

So I went and bought a set for my Thunderchief, and that sounded so good I had to get a set for my Roadstar.

They sound fantastic, my favorite strings before were D'Darrio roundwounds, but I had to mute them (on the elctric) to prevent the highs from ringing to much.

I am a 60's throwback that loves the blues and roots reggae so I can't get it too fat on the bottom end for my taste, but I like enough treble for definition, and tonal balance.

And these strings do it for me. Big bottom with a definte audible treble end but no ringing, no metallic fret click and best of all, NO MORE FINGER SQUEAK :hyper:.

On some songs, especially with rounds on the Thunderchief, squeaks were a consistent part of my sound, whether I wanted it or not. And these strings do not squeak!

feel great, sound great, and look great with black hardware!

Is there a tapwound fanclub around somewhere? Or is this it? :bassist::hyper::bassist:

This may be it.

Tapes aren't for everyone, that's for sure, but they can be an amazing part of the arsenal. I have a set on my Geddy with SD Quarter Pounders, and never play anywhere without having people come up and ask how I get my tone, especially other bassists.

My #1 is a Fender American Deluxe Jazz with Rotosound Flats, and I keep the Geddy on stage for slow songs or anything where I need something with a "stand up" sound.

Two questions:

1. Do tapewounds generally have less tension than flats... even if they are the same gage? For example if you have a flatwound and a tapewound and both were .100 which would have more tension?

2. This is a silly one, but are all tapewounds thicker than regular flatwound strings?

I'd like what I'm hearing about their tone and I'm thinking about getting a set.

Most tapewounds I've seen are a little thicker than corresponding flats, but some not very much. Rotosound tapewounds seem to be the thickest I have found. The Rotosound TruBass tapewound E string is .115 thick.
