Well at least around here.

What frats do for Gainesville:

~De-virginize fresman girls when they are drunk.
~Create big groups of guys who have no problem pushing around other peopl who arent in their group.
~Money for friends.
~An excuse to act like a jerk.
~Take all roles in student govt. and shape rules for their own benefit at the expense of others.

Want more reasons why I feel that way?

Well, there are frats here that do the same thing, but that doesn't mean they all do, or that they are all evil. And the one I'm in does good thing for the community (last year we had 1,000 service hours, put on a few organized events etc.etc.) and the college as well (we put time in here to improve dorms by repainting them or putting new carpets down - something the college should take of but doesnt). But just because that's what mine does doesn't mean I think they're all good either, cos I know they're not. Out of all the greeks on campus, I would say MAYBE three of them still do hazing and such. Not to bad considering how many we have on campus (not even sure how many chapters we have).
I'm by no means trying to force this on you or anything, nor trying to argue it one way or the other, I'm just going from my perspective, really. Sorry.

I was a victim of attempted hazing during my pledge semster. I was instructed to hold a 10ish pound rock over my head during work week (hell week, whatever. The week for pledges before school starts). I decided that the person that requested this needed said rock thrown at them. This put a quick end to the potential haze.

I then made sure I ran for chaplain of our house, which I got. Which allows me to proceed over expulsion trials. I had zero tolerance for anything resembling hazing.

By the way, Hazing officially came from our armed forces during the vietnam era. I'm sure there were cases long before that.

The great american college fraternal system is good while in school. After that, they just ask for money. Enjoy while you're there, and make sure you're in the house for the academics and athletics. You can party with any scumbag.

Tau Kappa Epsilon alum here. My chapter doesn't do a lot of the f*cked up things that you might hear about when you think "fraternity", and I wouldn't be part of an organization that did those things. All I can do is laugh at the anti-greek sentiments expressed here. Sometimes it is deserved, while often it is not deserved. It depends on the culture of your school. I went to a small, catholic college.. I'd imagine that the greeks at big state schools are very different. Still, often times it seems that the most vehement anti-fraternity talk comes from those who didn't have the balls to pledge themselves. BTW, the word "frat" is like nails on a chalkboard to my ears... ugh.

One of the frats around here (cant remember the name at the momment) has a big stone statue of a lion out front.

Whenever one of the frat brothers devirginizes a girl they pain the lions mouth red to look like blood. Sick.

holy crap.

omg.

i use that lion as a landmark for when i need to turn to get into the parking lot.

wow. i'm even more disgusted.

my roommate and i ate lunch with some sorority girls he knew from high school. i asked them why they joined.

one kind of couldn't quite explain. the other said, decisively, "money for friends."

the other: "to meet frat guys."

i feel like telling people that they can have friends, perhaps even a group of such, that they don't need to pay.

some frats, i overhear, are committed to community service.

at least one sorority got in trouble for hazing.

i didn't receive any money in scholarships from frats, so i REALLY don't like'em now!

lol. :D

but...wow. those frat stories... i don't doubt'em, and they make me sick.
