Any skilled Pick Players?

Look Up Yu~ki from Malice Mizer, their music is in japanese however if you listen his basslines are far more then an open E. He only plays using fingers during a solo

Anyone know of any skilled Solo or Metal Bassists that uses a pick and are actually skilled (not pounding the E string with 16th notes constantly) Are there any? Imean nothing wrong with picking fast but, most ive seen dont change notes at all almost. Or are all pick players crap? So are there any metal bassists that play with a pick, fast, change notes and actually can be heard?

Colin Hodgkinson and Steve Swallow are the other two top plectrum players IMO.

I know that he's already been mentioned in this thread, but I caught Anthony Jackson playing with Mike Stern and Dave Weckl the other night, and was absolutely FLOORED when I saw him grab a pick that he had wedged up on the headstock of his Fodera. It was the first time I've ever seen such a thing. The man DOES know what he's doing because he was using the pic to get some sounds that I don't think he could've otherwise gotten (I kinda think that was HIS point).

Got the Time was played with a pick. It's one of the rare times Frank used a pick.

Dave Ellefson is the only pick player I like and I think his skill is obvious on Rust in Peace.Some of the lines are really
difficult on that record.

The original bassist in The Dixie Dregs Andy West was a guy who had tons of facility with the pick and as far as I know never really played with his fingers much.

I like the bass on 'Legion' by Deicide, it mirrors the guitars and is very high in the mix, its sounds strange at first but very good, possibly the best bass I've heard on a metal album.

Also 'Nespithe' by Demilich has excellent bass, its a crucial aspect of this band and I'm not even sure for certain whether a pick is used; it sounds like it, definitly the best tech-metal music I have experienced.

Listen to the album "Pretest" by Dysrhythmia. Clayton Ingerson plays 6-string bass with a pick and his lines are supportive, creative, and really cool. He's not with the band any more. For their current album Barriers and Passages, they have Colin Marston on bass and he's a finger player.

Even if you can't hear the whole album, the song "Bastard" should be available for download on their site http://www.dysrhythmiaband.com and the bassline in that song is killer.

dysrhthmia are awesome.. i must say i prefer the bass work on barriers of passage to the other stuff but the earlier albums are also great. the bass plays a really important role in them.


i would also add jesse f keeler from death from above 1979 to the pick list..

he is a pretty cool bassplayer, definately not everyones cup of tea but he has some fun basslines and as they are only a 2 peice the bass plays a very strong role in the band.

ben kenney the latest incubus bassist has some nice melodic basslines performed with a pick

justin pearson from the locust and headwound city is a powerful pick player!

nick oliveri ex queens of the stone age bassist rocked with a pick

tapes and tapes, kings of leon, tool, biffy clyro, black rebel motorcycle club are a few other bands that use a pick and have interesting basslines..

i find myself playing with a pick a lot of the time these days.

Not Metal, but Ray Shulman was an incredible pick player. There are more pick players than you think.

I'm a GG fanatic and Ray's one of my all-time favorite bassists. It was him and another Plectrum using bassist, the late, great, John Glasscock, that first got me interested in playing the bass back in the 70's.
