Sounds like we've all dealt with the same couple of guys haha. Mine are usually due to me being a southpaw.I worked at GC for a while in 2009, and while I was there I heard the sales guys say some mind boggling things about lefties.
For example; Father and son come in looking for the sons first guitar, the son is 13. Father did some googling on guitars and found out lefty players aren't as common as righties, so he asks this question.
Dad: "My son is left handed, is that going to be a problem?"
Sales guy: "Lefties are hard to come by and are more expensive to buy, so he might want to just learn to play right handed."
..........
So I decide to step in and correct this.
Me: "Actually they aren't that hard to come by, and are no more expensive than any other guitar in that model, not that I've seen anyway."
Sales guy: " But it's easier to get a righty, than a lefty."
Me: "We have at least 10 models available in lefty in stock right now. He may not have the pick of the litter, but that's no need to tell a lefty to stay away from them.'
Sales guy:" Well you deal with him then, since your the lefty."
A fellow sales guy, got frustrated that I corrected him and walked away..... Classy.:scowl:
I know of a few lefties that play standard, so I asked him which he preferred. He wasn't sure so I gave him both to try, and he immediately took to the lefty.
Dad: "So do you think he will have trouble finding lefties?"
Me:" Not at all, I have 10 (at the time) of my own, and I find them used and get them for good price usually."
Dad:" he won't have an issue with learning?"
Me:" If he watches instructional videos or has someone teach him, it's a mirror image. I've capitalized off this since I've been playing."
Told them about our used gear program and a few other promos. They came back in a few weeks later and bought a lefty, and would only deal with me. Ran into the kid a few months ago, he's gotten pretty good and now has a small collection of lefties.
That was the same old song and dance they gave me when I started playing when I was that age. Had I just let it go, he probably would've bought a righty, never would've taken to it, and might've given up.
There are also a few in the automotive world (which is my other wallet depleting hobby) that say lefties cant drive stick.... My daily has been stick for going on four years... Just goes to show I guess.
