Any suggestions for GK MB112 speaker replacement?

Well somehow I managed to blow the ceramic 4 ohm 12 inch speaker in my Gallien Krueger MB112 ii combo bass amp. Before that it always worked great and was my main gigging amp.. I contacted GK to find that they no longer recone but can of course sell me a new one as the amp is now out of warranty. The hefty stock 12 inch weighs a bit over 10 pounds. Since I have to get a new one, I did some poking around for fun and to even lighten the load a bit more to see if maybe there might be a 4 ohm neo 12 out there that would be suitable, but the only choices I could find were 8 ohm. Thought I would ask if any of you are aware of 4 ohm 12 inch bass speakers, or maybe any other speaker suggestions before I go ahead with a stock gk replacement??

It may tough to find a driver that weighs less than 10 lbs, but check out US Speaker.I blew my GK neo 12s and was going to try the Beyma 12G40, They are rated down to 35hz,come in 4 or 8 ohm,and can handle 500 watts/1000 watts program, but they weight 13 lbs. US carrys all the major brands of bass drivers including Faitals.

Yeah, US Speaker have a couple of offerings for 12 inch neo bass speakers (Eminence, Celestion) but only in 8 ohm. If it is not a neo I will likely just go with another original GK speaker, as I was happy at least with the sound. However, I have concerns about how easily this one blew for whatever reason, as I have never pushed it that hard.

I am sure GK went with the stock 4 ohm due to the limited power of the MB112. I wonder if anyone tried an 8 ohm in one and got decent results? I don't need a ton of volume as the basses I play thru it have active electronics. Again, my Gk is the wood box MB112 (2nd gen with black grill cloth) not the smaller aluminum box one.

Methinks you have perhaps almost solved your problem. Sounds like maybe you are sending too hot a signal too the amp/speaker? I never use my active bass for more output, just for tone control. I've seen guys run their active basses wide open....a tried and true recipe for blown speakers, depending on the power of the active preamp. If I'm off base, my apologies.

Yeah full output is what I was referring too. And in my case my active basses put out a substantially hotter signal than my passives. Suppose it is possible that I blew it from running too hot a signal, but never had a problem running it the same way thru this little guy for close to 2 years now, and for the gigs I am playing never ran the amp over 1/2 volume. For that matter in my playing career of 40 plus years I recall having a few amp meltdowns, but the last time I remember blowing a speaker was back when I was in high school.

Anyway, I do appreciate the input about being more mindful with active basses...a healthy reminder. Now if I can get back to my orig message regarding speaker options would be most appreciated. Otherwise, I'm getting close to pulling the trigger on a replacement from Gk. Thanks

I know this is very old. But what speaker did you go with?
