Any TB'rs play golf?
Petsonally I drive a golf cart and hit golf balls. I have par'd a hole but also have taken 10 strokes on a par 5. I have quit many times and got rid of my clubs. Bought another set, quit, another set, quit. I finally decided to keep current set to remind myself how bad I am!
How about you guys?

My philosophy is to treat every hole as a par 5. If you average that, you'll have a round of 90.
90 golf isn't too shabby for a less-than-part-timer like me. I play less than three times a year.
However, this particular philosophy has yet to manifest itself to me. Close...

When I first started golfing at age 43, I figured I had seven years to make it onto the Senior Tour (50 and over). Today at 57, let's just say I fell a little short of that dream.

If I live to be 100, maybe then I'll shoot my age. Seriously, I've broken 100 a handful of times, and just barely. 95 is my best score.

Almost every time out, my first shot off the first tee is usually the best one of the day...all downhill from there...the wheels fall off rather quickly after that.

Played a 'water' course once, with lakes on every hole, and ran out of golf balls by hole #13.

EDIT: I almost forgot...my first job as a 15-yr-old kid was assistant greenskeeper on the local course. One of the perks was I got to play for free anytime I wanted. The thing was, after spending 8-9 hrs a day working on the course, the last thing I wanted to do was spend even more time on the course. Never took advantage of that perk.

You sound just like me! One time I shot a 93. Also same on the 1st drive. It will be a nice shot, then downhill from there! I am a ball chaser. All my golf balls are recycled. I find them looking for my own!

I don't need to chase a white ball around to have an excuse to hike some groomed bunny trails, but if someone else is paying my entry and rental, I'll buy the beer and grub.

I'm grateful to not have it be possible that I can get emotionally invested in developing a skill that truly takes a minimum of forty hours a week of focused training to progress at.

Sucking at bicycling is great- get angry? Pedal harder! "Whoops, accidentally sucked less today!"

I'm with Mark Twain (or whoever actually first said it) ... Golf is a good walk spoiled.:D
Yeah, that was Mark Twain. I thought it might have been Ambrose Bierce, but his Devil's Dictionary is silent on the subject...
Do I play golf? I've been trying very, very hard not to for most of my life. My mother was a semi-pro golfer, and she was obsessed with trying to make her left handed son (me) a golfer, too. Other than caddying for her (far too often, I might add), she never managed to get a club in my hand. However.. I have a friend who has been even more adamant about getting me out on a golf course than she ever was. When I went to visit him last year, I'd just barely unpacked my bags before he was planning a trip to his favorite golf course. When I told him (for the umpteenth time) that 1) I don't play golf; 2) I never wanted to play golf; and 3) I'm left handed, and none of his sets of clubs would work for me, anyway? He just smiled, went down to the basement, and came up holding a new set of left handed clubs. A pretty darn nice set, too. "These are yours. We tee off at 10 tomorrow morning." If somebody wants a golf partner that bad, there's nothing left to do but.. go and try to play golf. And, since he got me out there, finally, he's got us all planned up this year, too. I still agree with Mark Twain, but honestly? It ain't all that spoiled a walk...

I used to play. A lot.

As a kid, my buddies and I would ride our bicycles to the driving range, hit a few buckets and then earn some money back by diving for balls in the pond on the range. Righteous bucks for a 12 year old! Played on Par 3 course in my teens - ride the bicycle to the course with a driver, iron and putter from my Dad's bag! Sometimes we would go to the nearby private club and play holes 2 through 17! Then by age 20 I was working at a swanky private club. In the bar/restaurant, but being staff we were allowed to play the "Ladies Course" after 3pm. I'd play 2 rounds every day I worked. "Borrowed" a set of Ping Eye II's from the clubhouse. One day, I got a call from my roommates: "You gotta come home, we're watching Caddyshack!" (our favourite movie of the era). I replied: "Watch Caddyshack? I'm flippin' LIVING Caddyshack, man!". I must have played 200-300 rounds when I worked there.

Then I worked for a sporting goods company (skiing and golf) and we had pro deals on gear and free memberships at a local ski/golf resort. So spent a lot of time there and had some nice equipment with skis and golf! Eventually, I was promoted to a manager's position. One of my first acts as a manager was to close up shop (warehouse) early on a Friday afternoon and take my staff up to the golf course to play a round. My boss's brother was the owner of the golf club, so I got an earful on Monday morning from my boss!!! Then he slaps me on the back and says: "That's my boy", like he usually did when I messed up. Old School! Great times! By that time, i was all of 22 years old. Played a couple hundred more rounds in those years. Never had an official handicap but it was around 9 or 10. I was happy with an 80-85 shot round despite my absolutely horrendous slice. Didn't help being a lefty either

After leaving that situation and concentrating on finishing undergrad and graduate degrees, golfing became less frequent and had sold off my clubs. Fast forward a few years and I was awarded a new set of golf clubs for "perfect attendance" at the job I was in at the time. Wilson Pro Staffs. Cool! So played a bit more golf. That waned again after a few seasons what with family, work, bands and other sports. Sold off the clubs again. When I was in Afghanistan, a Navy Master Chief I worked with comes to me and ask: "Do you shoot left or right - and what's your home address?". He says to me that there was some sort of "Clubs for Servicemen" program and he put me on the list. So got a nice set of Callaways out of that. Package was waiting for me at home when I redeployed. Yeah!

These days I play in a few best ball tournaments every year and the odd wedding party related round; my office these days is right next to an awesome driving range. Last couple of summers it was not unusual to find me hitting a bucket or tow at lunch time. Gonna do the same this year.

Oh, and I've got a good story about getting run over by a golf cart at a work tournament years ago. I was at a social event recently and one of my old co-workers was there as well. First thing he asked me was: "Hey man, remember when Mike ran you over with the golf cart!?!". Oh, yeah, I remember!

I used to be able to break 100 fairly consistently, but I don't live close to any public courses or driving ranges, nor do I have the time to work on my swing. It's been about 2 years since I last played and I miss it.

I am a hardcore golfer. I've worked in the golf business since 1992. I played competitive amateur golf, and won several tournaments, and club championships. I worked as a greenskeeper, and then I turned professional and worked in the proshop side of the business. I teach as well. ...and all resulted because my bass students were away for summer holidays, and I got back into golfing to fill some free time. LOL

My dad has mad golf skills. He’s ambidextrous but prefers to play golf left handed, but he can play just as well left handed with right handed clubs as he can with left handed clubs. Before he got too old he’d talk some sucker into a round for twenty bucks a hole and he'd play left handed with their right handed clubs. When he finally actually retired he decided he wanted to play on the PGA Senior tour and qualified right out of the gate. He finished in the money pretty regular, but he got tired of all the sit around in motel room time and he learned to count cards then went to Vegas and won a crap ton of money. When he tried it in Atlantic City he was escorted off the property. He taught me to play golf in my early teens and i got pretty good at it but i just never really enjoyed the game. He told me golf was simple, it takes about five minutes to learn the basic stroke, then the rest of your life to perfect it.
