Anybody have a Sunn 6x12?

I know some of you out there have been fortunate enough to pick up a vintage Sunn 6x12 cabinet with the original speakers, and I know that both Eminence and Jensen supplied speakers (specifically the Jensen C12N). But I’m curious as what the speakers were that had the aluminum dust covers with the little breathing hole. Are those by Eminence or Jensen (or other)? And are they alnico or ceramic? I appreciate your replies, and any pics you wanna post would be cool too!

Are you talking about the 30” wide cabs with the flat baffle, that would go with the 1200s or 1000s tube heads, or the 24” wide(40” high)ones with the inverted “V” shaped baffle, that was usually paired with the solid state Concert series heads?

They sound like CTS made speakers.

The flat baffle style that came with the 1200 tube head.

back then normally speakers were alnico.

I played in a band where the guitar player had one of those Sunn 6x12 cabs ... We both had the big Sunn tube heads and I had the 4x12 cab with Cerwin Vega speakers which gave the cab extra high end.

I’ve seen pictures of them with Alnico magnet speakers but couldn’t tell what brand they were. I’ve seen Jensen C12Ns in one but they didn’t have aluminum dust covers. I’m sure that Sunn, like Fender and others, used whatever they could get for a decent bulk price.

You’re lucky, that particular configuration is relatively hard to come by. It was meant to be a guitar cab(nominally), but Chris Squire used one, and with the 15” depth it certainly would work for bass(with appropriate drivers). I’ve owned a number of 4x12 cabs of that series, and the speakers have been a mixed bag. Usually CTS with square magnets in the early days, the use of Jensens was limited, then came alnico Eminences, then the proprietary alnico ‘Sunn Transducer’, with no speaker code. I believe those were OEM’s manufactured by Eminence, but I could be wrong. Here are a couple I have, chrome dome, and not…

I don't have much to contribute here outside of saying I owned one of those cabs many years ago, paired it with a Hartke 3500 head and it was super loud, a real great set up for rock bass.

This might answer some questions.
