As long as we have mysteries, any ideas what this is? It's got a short scale, chunky bolt on neck, and the only identifying feature is "Made in Japan" on the neck plate. The pickguard isn't tort - it's more like a semi-transparent leopard print pattern. I believe it is a 1960s Japanese bass, but it may be later. It sounds great both unplugged and through an amp, and I would like to know what it is, if there's any way to find out.

Is it just me or does anyone else think the maple looking bass might not be wearing it's original body? the neck and hardware looks like the old Japanese stuff but the body doesn't... Wonder if the body is a one off someone made?

(Once again, Google offers us a results filtering system so sloppy and imprecise that none of us would wish our cities' water filtration systems to mimic it.)

Thanks. It appears to be a Canora or Sekova Vulcan. I know the tailpiece isn't original, and the wiring is a bit of a mess, but at least one of those is pretty close. Mine isn't red - it is more of a lurid sunburst, so it may be the exact same thing only sold with a different brand name. Whatever name the factory stuck on the headstock is long gone, and the headstock itself is a little sawn off. The finish appears intact on the flattened out portion, so either it got refinished or it was like that from the beginning. I seriously doubt anybody would bother to refinish something like this, so it must have been made as a house brand for somebody, somewhere in the early to mid 1960s. Gotta love Gozilla meets Bambi style instruments.

We had/have the Guitar version of the black one in the shop I used to work at. I can find out about that one. The blonde is beautiful but looks like a frankenstein as previously noted. something about that bridge and the pot plate looks experimental
