Oh boy, here we go again! There's been a few threads on this subject already one which Jauqo posted a link to. I truly hope this thread doesn't get nasty.
Is it overrated? NO! When used in proper context, it can be very musical, creative and it's a beautiful thing when done right! I will say I appreciate those that can play those million note a minute solos but I don't find that very musical. Any solo, whether slapped or played fingerstyle should be musically lyrical and pleasing to the ear!
Also remember, we all come from different walks of life and for some of us, slap bass is what we grew up listening to and have come to love and appreciate. It's part of our makeup. For others, slap bass is not a part of your makeup and you shouldn't be forced to like or accept it. If you don't dig it, fine. Don't knock it though!
+1+1. Well said!
Bottom line is we're all bass players. For any of us to knock each others' preferred or not preferred technique is ridiculous.
Post something more productive like guitarist\drummer\soundmen\singer\keyboard player bashing or tube vs SS or victor vs jaco or P bass vs all!![]()
+1, DW and I are about the same age and grew up on Graham, Louis Johnson, Clarke, etc. Slap is in my DNA. Slap is not much in current r&b, but it will be back one day.![]()
The first time I heard slap bass I was probably four or five, I woke up early one day and wanted to watch a movie, so I went into my living room and looked at the VCR and the case for "The Land Before Time" was on top of it. That was NOT the movie that was in the VCR, it was a 70's or 80's adult movie that my parents left in the VCR, soundtrack was slap bass. So not only was I horrified when I was that young (parents talked to me and told me about the birds and the bees) but I was even more horrified when I realized what my parents were doing watching that video when I got older. So, to this very day, when I hear slap bass, I can't get that image out of my head. I play fingerstyle or use a pick.
I disagree. While you won't hear it on the radio, R&B, Funk and Jazz and Gospel still utilize slap bass. Take a trip to Europe or Japan and you'll see and hear plenty of slap bass. If you're not finding it, you ain't looking hard enough for it. I own a ton of it!I think it's still around, though not really in the R&B genre as much.

I think it also comes in what type of circles you hang in! If you play with mature, well rounded bass players, you'll never have a problem with anyone overusing slap! If you hang with cats who think Flea or Victa Wooten is the end all of of bassdom, then you're hanging with the wrong cats. I don't have a problem with anyone asking if I can slap! I play what the song needs..........period! If that's not good enough, I'm in the wrong band! Buh bye!I do enjoy slap in small amounts and with the right bassist. The problem I see is that most people in the general public think slap is the ultimate bass technique. Somehow it is seen as the master's technique and unless you can play slap, you are no good.
Always been a frustration to me and who hasn't come across someone in a jam session that says first thing to the bass player, DO YOU SLAP? :scowl:
How was it rated in the first place?
I'm not impressed by cliche's regardless of how they are played...
I love music, not techniques...
