Double Bass Anyone else here appreciate an amped, overdriven sound like Ron Carter's?

George Mraz used a Wilson 4 Element when I saw him with Tommy Flannigan and regardless of his tonal choices this lines and solos were among the finest I’ve heard ever and that includes Ron Carter, Christian McBride, Dave Holland, Gary Peacock, Drew Gress, John Pattucci, Jay Anderson Steve La Spina, and Scott Colley and a host of others I’ve been fortunate enough to hear live. Just my take of course. Here’s George Mraz with Billy Childs and Billy Hart.

Got to see George a few years back at Dizzy's Club Coca Cola. I started chatting up a pretty blonde sitting next to me at the bar. Turns out it was his wife!

Yes I'm a big fan of Mraz and have heard him live several dozen times at least. The reason I posted that Dolphin Dance link a few posts back was to show how even a master like him can have his sound misrepresented on recordings. FWIW my favorite Mraz was Tommy Flanagan's trio with Billy Higgins on drums.

The high-level of his playing always carries me past any "recorded sound" issues on recordings.
His "sound " is pretty good on this, and his playing is from the Planet Mraz.

I like the sound of Cleveland Eaton on his early 70s solo albums and with Ramsey Lewis. Tunes like "Kufanya Mapenzi", "Summer Breeze", "Jungle Strut" etc. Very funky. That's the sound and groove I'm currently aiming for as a DB noob.

I got to know Cleve many years ago, when he would drive down from Georgia to occasionally sit in with us in Tallahassee. He had a warm personality and great chops. He was a standout with the Basie band, as is Scotty Barnhart, band leader and jazz faculty member here at FSU. Great times!

To me, the Realist sounds like a bass from where I am standing when I’m playing, behind and off to the side. Whereas the Underwood sound like a bass when I am standing in front of it.

I got to know Cleve many years ago, when he would drive down from Georgia to occasionally sit in with us in Tallahassee. He had a warm personality and great chops. He was a standout with the Basie band, as is Scotty Barnhart, band leader and jazz faculty member here at FSU. Great times!

Mr. Eaton played my bass when sitting in with a band I had at a hotel in Lincoln, NE in 1970. He was on tour with John Mayall. A wish of mine to this day is that I could make my bass sound like that when I played it.
