Anyone Else Like Neil Young?

I'm a huge fan of Neil Young, and I'm also pretty bored, so here's a Neil Young thread.

He's definitely one of the best musicians to come out of Canada (rivaled only by Rush and Matt Good, IMO).

So do you like Neil Young? What's your favourite album/song? Anyone out there wanna check him out but don't know where to start?

Also, I'd like to see some talk about his latest album Living With War. It gets good reviews, but I'd sure like to hear some thoughts from fellow TBers.

Neil Young's way better than Matt Good, Matt Good sucks, Neil Young is more comparable to Corb Lund ie The Smalls, Paul Anka, Barnaked Ladies, Bruce Cockburn, Leonerd Cohen, The Hip, even Shania, Gob, Robbie Robertson, The Guess Who, BTO, SNFU, Gordon Lightfoot, Sloan, [Northern Pikes, Widemouth Mason and Joni Mitchell (from Saskatoon;))], Ween, Blue Rodeo, 54-40, Feist, Even Paul Shaffer, but not Matt Good man I just don't like him!!!

If your looking for chops in a Neil Young guitar solo, you might be mising the point of what Neil Young is about. In his rock material he is about the essence of the primal and rebel feel rock music was originally about. I might not like Neil's whole catalog of music, but I respect his constantly changing vision as an artist. He's not an oldies act, he has a forty year long career of writing music that matters, even if you disagree with his subject matter. He is one of the most important artist in the canon of rock! Just my two pennies.:ninja:

Bingo !! That pretty much says it all, like him or not.

I love Neil. I think Comes A Time might be my favorite. And if you want dirty, nasty, greasy Rock & Roll, check out Tonights The Night.

I'm a longtime fan of Neil Young.
I think he's a great songwriter, and I really enjoy his guitar playing and his harmonica playing. He's an excellent acoustic guitarist, but I also really enjoy listening to his electric playing and his solos, I even like his grungy tone he gets on his electric (it's his sound). IMO he has great phrasing and he's very melodic. Sure, he's no Jeff Beck but we already have Jeff Beck, and Neil's style is just his style.

And after reading that bit above about what Duane Allman said, I've sadly lost a bit of respect for Duane (if it's true), but I'd like to hear exactly what he had to say about Neil's playing.

I totally dig him for what he does.

To me, he's a lot like Van Morrison or Bob Dylan. While they tend to sing/play out of tune, have sloppy phrasing, etc. they somehow create 'art and intensity' that makes their technical 'issues' irrelevant to me.

Does anyone else feel like they have to like either lynard skynard or neil young. I like lynard skinard for some of their music, but for the most part it's hard for me to get around the ideas of their songs. I mean I enjoy listening to freebird and everything, but I just dont like how they portrait the south (im sure you could say the same thing about Neil Young on the other end of the spectrum.)

I admit to not having one of his albums, but i do like what i hear on the radio.. sugar mountain, old man, southern man, rockin in the free world, my my hey hey..

Hes a great folk artist, he has an ever evolving message (unlike alot of people who stick with the same 'war is bad' message) he might not be Jimmy Page, hes not even Kim Mitchell, but he makes good music

I challenge anyone to play a solo of one note for several bars and make it sound as good as Neil Young does. The man is a brilliant songwriter, and even has a few epic lead guitar lines in some of his older songs. He may not shred, but he has a ton of feeling and, most importantly, character.

Exactly, well said. I'd rather listen to a Neil Young solo than one by Yngwie Malmsteen anyday.
