Just what I was going to say. Plus my rick's neck is thicker than my cousin's precision's neck. You're playing the wrong Rickys.

i don't get the people who say that Rickenbacker should modernise the whole instrument. Fender Jazz's and P's and Rays are built like they were 30 years ago and no one is complaining. same for guitars, a strat is still a strat and a tele will always be a tele.
And thank god a Rick will always be a Rick. If you don't like them, too bad for you. Alos,i thinkt hey pice they command new is a close to a bargain. other basses of equal quality cost twice as much. YMMV

You played a couple and hated three? Did one just look bad?
haha, no, I played three and batted 1000 for not liking them, I was just saying that I wasn't just exposed to a single example that I'm basing all this debate off of, I was able to use more than one, set up differently for different styles by different players, and form a cohesive opinion on the basses, which I do not like.
And they ALL looked bad
, but I'll admit they have that "exotic" look that gives me GAS, but once I saw the price tag and then played one I was disgusted by how much branding can effect the bottom line.- Feb 21, 2007

Yes, I'm inclined to agree with you there. Although, fender has something going for it because they took OFF the pup covers from their old 60s P basses. Even when Flea got his, the first thing he did was remove that ugly thing and popped a sticker on the thing.
Nowadays, people seem to design off of the fender's original guitars (roughly, of course) and I guess it was a good twist of fate that these designers didn't copy Rickys or else we'd live in a world of cheesy antiques!
And no music sites post a Rickenbacker's price because they're too embarassed by how much they are
And, If i could get a brand new one for 400, eh, yeah, I'd buy it. Only after I got all my GAS out.
They look cool to me, but I don't like the way they play. The string spacing seems awkward, the neck is sticky, the body has uncomfortable edges, no place to rest my plucking hand.
If I played with a pick I might like them better.
Not too many bass players that I like, play them. Chris Squier is probably my favorite Rick player. And I love Lemmy but he's almost like a rythym guitar player in Motorhead. His bass playing in Hawkwind was more interesting. Did McCartney play a Rick sometimes? Okay then add him to the list.

I understand how they could be perceived as ugly. I'll admit they do look "vintage-yet-quirky" but to me that's part of the visual charm.

i had a 66 that was dark blue with the checkered binding

and when i had to decide whether to sell my '62 jazz bass or my '66 rick to finance my first svt purchase in the early '70's
i am glad that i decided to sell my rick
i am sad that i sold it
but i am glad that i kept my jazz and i still have that instrument in my hands today
the sound of the rick is like the sound of the jazz or my precision
it is different from instrument to instrument
and it is up to you and your hands to make it sound right
i still lust for a 4001 with a fireglow finish and checkered binding
of course my first svt was the unit with the old power cap tubes and i ended up buying and selling five of those bad boys

Obviously you don't like Rickenbackers, so whats the point? you can take that pickup cover off by the way. I think new Rick's go for 1600 right now, and you get a lot for that compared to other brands. The company builds so few instruments because it ony has a small workshop in California where all instruments are built. The labour involved in a neck through construction and binding is probably more compared to a bolt on too. Rickenbacker doesn't have overseas production like many other brands, which to me is a sign of not 'selling out' as that only happens when the accountants and lawyers take over. That reassures that they want to keep control over how Rickenbackers are supposed to be built, i.e. to a very high standard.

You want "modern" Rics and a kick to the low end just get a 4004. If you don't like Rics buy something else. You don't see me whining about hating cookie cutter Fenders. Why bother....I just don't own 'em. I'll stick with my Rics and you play whatever floats your boat. There are plenty of choices out there.
Ricks and P's occupy a similar place in my heart.
Playing a P with flats or my friend's Rick with a pick is a joyful experience. I love the tones of both and I dig their vintage look and vibe.
On the other hand, neither has my sound and the Rick is not the most comfortable instrument for me to play.

I picked up a Rick somewhat recently. I can say I really love the tone out of it as it is completely different from anything I have.
The construction is pretty top notch for a production instrument and it has a cool vintage-ish vibe about it. The things I don't like about it are really just due to the other instruments I play. I am definitely not as fast on the somewhat chunkier neck than my Sterling or Jazz. I do not like the pickup cover, but haven't bought the spacer to cover up the hole for when I do eventually remove it again. The scale length also has me paying a lot more attention to what I am doing, or I tend to go a little far.

I love the way they look and sound, but they always felt ******** in my hands. The necks always felt sticky and wimpy, and the straight no-taper neck feels weird after so many years with Fender-style basses.
I have had a 82 4001 model since 1984 and theres not many others I can get that same feel, It's like I'm holding my own D**K, when I'm playing live and I get a killer sound with my SVT. Sure the sound of a P-Bass and an SVT is great combo but the necks are too fat (not that I have porky paws or anything), or I could play one of those little g@y stick things, that does not look like a bass. It's just a matter of taste and prefference and I've got goooood taste!!!
I'm glad that Ricks are a special flavour of bass. If everyone here was gassing for one they would be way more expensive for me!

I looooooooooove my 4003. It's completely stock, except for a Pickguardian pickup plate. My other main bass is a P-bass Special, by the way, and I go back and forth between 'em with no trouble.
