So here is my new head I picked up last weekend. It consists of a Furman PQ-3 preamp/parametric eq and an original Acoustic model 361 power amp section. Yep, it is all housed in a milk crate.
I showed up just to buy the Furman, but the guy said the price included the entire rig, so I figured what the hell. When I got home and plugged it in I was pretty surprised to find out it all worked, and more surprised that it sounds great. It bumps pretty hard when it powers on, and there is a little bit of hum, but otherwise it is quiet, powerful, and full sounding. Now I just need to squeeze a compressor in to the empty "rack" space.

You win!
That thing looks tough as nails; a little hack job, a little bit home made, an plenty of attitude.
If it sounds good I'd use it in a heartbeat.

I had a close cousin to that Furman back in the mid-late '70s, and it's what I used to "fix" a lean-sounding amp and a lean-sounding folded horn. I think it had a green panel but I could be wrong on that point. Never had a problem with it. I recall it being very clean and somewhat "character-less," but back then it was volume at all costs and everything else came in a distant second.

The Furman PQ-3 is a great pre-amp. I got mine used at Makin' Music many, many years ago, and it's come in handy for dozens of things over the years. Best $100 bucks I ever spent for gear.

That's what I had to cough up for this. I have been amazed at the price of some of these preamp/eq units. I never paid much attention to them until recently, but there are a lot of options out there for very little money compared to bass specific preamps.
