Anyone ever change their strings 3 hours before a Gig.

Not on my basses, but when I was the sound/light/tech guy for a band I have changed strings right before and even during gigs....

What is the question? Have you played at all today and find the sound not to your li9king at all?

I've changed strings shortly before going on stage a few times. I don't really like to do that as it necessitates minor adjustments to the rig you're playing through to get over the much-too-zingy new string sound and tends to upset sound engineers as your sound sits differently in the mix with the guitars after the initial soundcheck. I found that this was less of a problem when playing fingerstyle and more of a problem when playing pick style.

I used to do this all the time when i was gigging. Tho I was using my old Rick 4001 which sounded miserable when live to begin with. So it was usually a desperation move to get a bright sound that would be audible over the rest of the band.

Now I'd say the deader and older the better, they're "broken in" and will stay in tune. I only replace now when they break.....

Hmmm. I use a 74' 4001. Sounds great live. Cuts through nicely. You use flats eh? I prefer Blue Steels.

I changed strings before a gig once. It was a trebly bass with piezo pickup and low action and it clacked and zinged like hell.

I usually try avoid it, i dont really like the sound of new strings and if you're like me and play the strings harder than usual when playing live you usually strech them a bit and have to tune up a lot more than usual.

I only bother changing strings if the band/gig calls for it. I've had the same strings on my zon 5 for about six months and have no intention of changing them before I use it at a New Years gig - because old funk/rock & roll doesn't need fresh, zingy strings. I *was* in a band years ago that did the whole metal/funk/alt thing where I was always changing strings - I wanted to sound bright & huge in that band...

So I'd say that it all depends, ya know?
