I used to do this all the time when i was gigging. Tho I was using my old Rick 4001 which sounded miserable when live to begin with. So it was usually a desperation move to get a bright sound that would be audible over the rest of the band.
Now I'd say the deader and older the better, they're "broken in" and will stay in tune. I only replace now when they break.....

Why are you chainging strings at all? Did they break. Otherwise no need to change strings. i <3 old flatwounds.
