Anyone have cracks on the TOP of their modulus quantum?

Yeah I just bought a bass with cracks coming from the corner of the neck pocket the whole way to the neck pickup cavity (that's about half an inch) on the TOP.

I already know about the very common finish cracks at the back of the neck pocket because I have had a few modulus's. This is different.

The treble side is not too bad but the bass side is 1mm wide and over half inch deep. Anyone else have this?

I am thinking of returning it. I should post pics soon.

WOW! Never heard of one being that bad. I own three Mod's and two have hair-line finish cracks in the neck pocket. I owned a few Ibanez basses back in the day that did the same thing. These cracks you have are in WOOD not just the finish? How old is the bass? Did you just get it? You can "freeze" the crack by putting epoxy in there ( using a tooth pick / needle to get the epoxy down in there ). Had to do that on a vintage bass I owned. It DOES work.

OK here are the pics... the first one was from the auction (I added arrows and sent it to the seller.) I paid about $1150 for this and I don't know yet if I can get it repaired or if I should return it.

I am not sure if the seller sanded it himself or not. I don't think so since he said he got it cheap because it was halfway through a refin. I guess the guy who sold it to him saw that and decided not to tell himv(It would be VERY HARD to miss if you were sanding it.). But I am guessing.

The seller replied once and "appeared" to have not known about it. He was talking about insurance and damage during shipment, but because of the epoxy residue and the fact that I show him a very hard to see pic from his auction (the one with the arrows) it is apparent that it was this way when he had it.

and yes the body is mostly bare of finish but needs to be completed around the edges.

Warrior that's some bad luck on a nice bass. I've had about 10 Modulus's and currently own two , and have never seen a crack. i did have a Kramer that cracke along the neck pocket and it was fixed with epoxie and it came out great. It looks like to me the cracks are real deep and ( I know this sounds crazy) but no pun intended, crazy glue or CYA type glue is what Warwick recommends to fix cracks in theie basses. I'v used it and it works. Crazy glue has a long setting glue thet will fill up the open areas and all different types of viscosities up to a gel....If you are near Philly I know a good luthier who can do that suff. Hope this helps..

I don't want to assume TOO MUCH!!! Maybe he is honest, maybe not. I won't know, but it will be resolved somehow. I am sure of that! I emailed him the day I recieved it.

Frankly I don't know any of the facts concerning the seller except it was this way when he had it, and that it wasn't disclosed in the auction. That should be all I need for him to help me.

haha yeah I'm just guessing here, but that would be my first reaction...

My old bass teacher had a Modulus with exactly the same problem. Modulus must have realized their design flaw, because new ones have necks that extend to the pickup.


Here's what you should do:

Call Modulus and explain the problem in detail. They should offer you a really good deal on a new body. They offered to build my teacher a new body with any top wood for $300.

Were the cracks there prior to refinishing? I've seen them on older Moduli before, but this one looks to have pocket gaps large enough that it's a question worth asking!

You use that guy? I took lessons from him for a few months just to load up on a few different "perspectives" a few years back (4 in total), an he was a perfect reminder of what I shouldn't have ever looked past Randy McCluskey. What a crockpot bunch of lessons.

As a Modulus owner and someone who often buys bassess online- RETURN THIS THING.

a. A partly refinished Modulus is worth only 1/2 of what you paid!

b. Those are cracks in the wood- not just the finish!

c. If the previous owner did not disclose this obvious and terrible flaw- that person is dishonest and just trying to pawn off a cracked bass.

d. The neck moves?! Going out of tune?! RETURN IT!!!!!!!
