You want to get a laugh? Set a bunch of New England amateur musicians to playing anything Latin. From the pronunciation of "tortillias" on, they're clueless. I suspect you've got to imbibe this stuff from early life.

"Low Rider" is not exactly guaguanco. If you can't pull it off without having a "real knowledge" of Afro-Cuban music then something is wrong.

I also do not hear harmonica in it, but a hip harmonica reading of the instrumental melody should definitely work.

What chords? I don't really hear any instrument playing straight chords. I think there's a piano part on the left track that comes in with the bass part, then that guitar lick comes in. Other than that I don't hear any chords.

I used to play it in another band and we had a harp player that did the main line. Easy song with lots of subtle parts. Don't forget the cowbell!

It’s a cool enough song but it’s also one of those songs that nobody really know, they just recognize the rhythm. If the guitarist fakes it nobody will catch it. Your singer could make up words too. Great song but it’s not a song the typical audience would know if it wasn’t exact to the record. Have fun. Pure party rock.

I agree. G indeterminate or sometimes called G5. The bass part definitely has a Bb note and the (kinda hidden) guitar part has a B natural (not at the same time).

Lowrider used to be a barband staple in my area about 20 years ago, right up there with BrownEyedGirl, Mustang Sally, Wonderful Tonight, Takin Care of Business, Margaritaville, etc ad nauseum. Like a lot of former barband staples, it doesnt get covered as much as it used to: the song is 50 years old after all

He could play almost anything and it would add some interest to the song as long as he stays out of the way of the groove.

The song has a key signature of one (F) sharp.
So if it’s in G major, the bass is playing Gm pentatonic. Or it’s in Em, or D mixolydian.

Guitarist admits that his solo in G (major) is musically incorrect.
Key of G. Tonal centre is D mixolydian.
Play Gm pentatonic on bass.
You’ll be fine.

I have to disagree with the OP on one point; while the baseline may be repetitive, it’s definitely not boring by any stretch. Unless you consider packing a dance floor while playing a killer groove no fun.

No wonder I usually got picked over the other bassists in band auditions - I've never considered any bass part "boring," and it shows.
