I think Stingrays look great, but could never get a sound that worked that well for me out of the 5-string I had. Back then I played a lot more aggressively than I do now, so that probably had something to do with it.

I have a Thumb bass now. I feel like I can get a fairly convincing Stingray tone out of it if need be. :hiding:

I personally like the stingray 5's I have no output issues from sting to string or any of that other stuff. I don't care of Fenders (feel and tone) or warwicks (feel), but hey one mans trash is another's treaser, to each his own, etc, etc, etc.

Wow, I've never seen so much dislike for a Musicman basses on this board before. There was a thread a short time ago about people going back to Fender basses, and many were switching back frum Musicman basses.

Unreal.

I'd wanted a MM Sabre for years, and never found one in good condition, and then the Stingray 4HH came out, and it was like to me, too good to be true.

I finally got one last Fall, after a/b'ing at guitar center with my Fender American P, and loved it immediately.

I absolutely love the big fat deep tones I can get out of the back pup, and the growly tones that come out from the other positions.

Construction is perfection. Just top notch.

To each his/her own, I guess. I don't get it.

My guitard friend will only play Strats with a certain neck size, fret size, blah blah blah. I alway bug him that there are so many different guitars out there and that maybe a little variety would be inspiring...He doesn't agree.

I own an SR5, SR4, Fretless Jazz and brand new 08 American Standard Jazz. The new jazz feels like butter but after playing it for a week, I plugged in my SR5 and remembered right away why its my #1. Everything about it, the tone, feel, weight, and appearance just does it for me. Of course, thats why we all love something different.

There does seem to be a pretty clear line between Musicman and Warwick lovers. Almost like they are a polar opposite. I do find Warwick necks really thick but haven't been able to really play one for more then a few minutes.

I hate freakin' carrots.

But seriously folks. All good observations. With the exception of the 'g' string issue, and possibly the painted neck on the Bongo (it's actually varnished over the paint so ... never mind), most of these are stylistic objections. Neck too thin, neck too fat, tone too "clean," too "hi-fi," etc. Different tools for different applictions and tastes. I think most folks, even if they don't like the neck, tone, styling, etc., would say that the build quality is a decent value-for-dollar paid.

I can't find a comfortable place for my right hand on a stingray. I don't like how tight the string is in the normal humbucker position, and I like to rest my thumb on the pickup. I was never able to be comfortable with one long enough to give it a real shot. The Sterling neck is awfully comfy though

I play between the pups on my 4HH, rest my thumb a bit on the back pup.

Man I Love Musicman and think they are the only basses out there that capture the true spirit of the orig. Fenders.
I have love them from the first way back in the 70's My problem is price. Its kind of hard for me to pay out the bucks knowing that when they were first introduced they only cost 350.00 now like 1,300.00 is a bit much but I guess you pay for what you get.
I just got back into playing and am still out of it when it comes to some of the other basses you guys are talking bout. Can some one please post links where I can see these newer basses and their specs.?

I've never liked anything about MM basses, apart from what some of the players out there contribute to music by playing them. But why do you care about what I think about them...?

I think the reason you don't see so much MM-bashing is that it's just more fun to talk about basses we love... That's how I feel anyway :)

Which is what makes the world go round, "my Chevy is better than your Ford". No hostility here, but I just picked up a used Bongo and can't be happier with the consistency of output and lack of dead spots and I love the tonal options the HH config offers. I have G&L's and a Carruthers and have owned Fenders (no Sadowskys Lulls Mtd's) due to price issues. My particular Bongo is a screamin quality used deal. YMMV
