You're really putting too much effort into this. Twenty two people getting rid of old SS compared to only one getting rid of an Ampeg. That sounds about right.

even though i do agree with aborgman that there are more old ss amps being used than tube just because of sheer numbers, that would be my interpretation of those stats as well.

Fixed.

Most people I know that don't like a SVT are those that like nice hi-fi sounds for slapping and such. The reason SVT is so poular is because more times than not it's the Ampeg sound you are hearing on the radio.

just like fenders, you are so used to the sound , of course some people prefer something else , but most go with the flow, and I have to say I love svt and fenders as well some other stuff, but fenders and svt style amps and guitars are so popular because they tone are very appealing.

Tubes amps are modern. What makes them inferior?

You seem to need reading or perhaps comprehension lessons?

Your quote was "not" mine. I said "old amps" never mentioned "tube amps". I, infact, call those amplifier types "valves". "Tubes" is an American phrase I believe.

This is a huge problem with the internet. Always someone waiting to toss a dart at someone by misquoting them and inventing an issue of contention.

Maybe you should take some of those "comprehension lessons". This thread is not about "old amps".

I misquoted you; really? Seems impossible seeing as how I clicked on the "quote" button.

I've had and loved a couple SVTs/810s, and would buy another if I was looking for a nice thick supporting bass rig for rock ala Weezer or some of the other mainstream and indie rock groups around these days, but for other things it would not be my first choice.

As far as the sheer number of SVTs- I have gone to a couple shows (or more) a week for the last 15 years across several cities in the US, and while many touring bands playing nostalgic-tinged rock and stoner metal certainly haul around SVTs ( mostly CLs)- on the local circuits I rarely see them, and in Portland nowhere near as many as I see old SS GKs, Sunns, Acoustics, Peaveys, etc. (and of course outside of a rock context, I honestly can't think of a single show where I've ever seen an SVT...). I rarely see vintage SVTs played by anyone- local or from out of town, but see oodles of late 70s and early 80s solid state amps still rocking. To be honest, the only place I've seen a bunch of vintage SVTs in Portland is lining the wall of the SourSound amp repair shop everytime I've gone in there- not knocking SVTs for this, as old electrical components always eventually fail, but it has amazed me to imagine a time when I might actually see (m)any of those many amps being used in such a music-rich city!

That is twice, you didn't read what I wrote. You wrote "Tube amp". I did not.

The thread asked who would not use an SVT.

Answer: Me, I do not like old amps, and I do not like the sound of an SVT.

I didn't read the whole thread. Apologies in advance.

I love the way the SVT sounds. I think anyone who has good taste in tone does... it's almost impossible not to like it. I'll probably wind up owning one at some point in my life just for that reason alone but there are two things about the SVT that bug me.

1) It's not the most convenient amp on the planet. No tube amp is. Price, maintenance, reliability, and extreme weight hardly add up to an easy amp to get and own.

2) Sometimes people act like the SVT is the ONLY tone solution. Not true. I'm almost annoyed by the fact that it's more or less the only amp among the rock and pop crowd. This isn't really the amp's fault, of course but I wish people would accept other amps are quality, too.

Right now, I'm just seeing how much satisfaction I can squeeze out of more affordable and pragmatic solid state solutions and I'm super happy so far. No complaints.
