Anyone play ironic or odd basses in their bands?

I have the opposite problem, I'm short so I want a shorter scale bass (32" sounds ideal) but all the basses I like are huge on me. I've always loved the look of the grabber but apart from the long scale, the body is just huge. Perhaps I could play the ironic card by getting a Squire Bad Badtz Maru and dropping an MM Humbucker in it haha.

I think amateurs try to compensate for their lack of ability with flashy gear.
I think pros just know what looks right, and don't talk about it.

Point 1: I agree.
Point 2: I can agree. However, the pro may play what pays.

The audience cares what the bass player is using?

In my case, the crowd was dancing. Win. None of them could name or cared what kind of bass I was playing.

Agreed Pretty sure that goes with almost all equipment with music in general except for avid fans of the particular instrument. Audience don't care as long as it sounds nice, unless your guitar or drums or flute or whatever has giant spikes or wings coming out of it with sparkly neon lights of fire... I can go on.

When I saw Chris Wood bust out a Hofner I laughed to myself because I thought THAT was pretty ironic. Then I heard him play it and my inner monologue ate its words.

Not all of us play dance music.

In a way, yeah, most of us do. I mean, I've seen people dance to just about anything if it's good enough. Rock music VERY much included.

Not a bass, but I once saw a guitarist playing a gothic lookin' gray sparkle flying v style guitar at my brothers church. It looked soooo out of place, but I think it might be his only guitar. Not that you couldn't play a guitar like that in church, but they were playing worship music from about 1990 - think Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith. It was pretty comical.

+1 to the "upright at a metal show" comment. Makes me want to learn upright for just that reason.
