Anyone Run Bass Through A Marshall 4x12?

Hi, I just bought an angle-front Marshall 412 with the 75 watt Celestions in it for my "home studio". Of course I'm wondering how it would sound for bass....the 300 watt rating makes me think it might be OK if the volume doesn't get out of hand. A looooooong time ago I played through a 100 watt Marshall bass head and one 412 and I recall it sounding pretty cool. Anyone else tried this?

as long as you dont let the low end get too out of hand, it shouldn't hurt the speakers. I'm assuming it would give a nice mid range though.

Only then were you ready to rock!!.

Phrases like - gve me a Jazz bass and a Marshall stack, then let me die like a man!! - come to mind.

Yes, I'm old enough to remember those days too. In these times we live in....the age of specialization....it's hard to make a case for such behavior though.

If this were a motorcycle forum, I'd wax nostalgic about the days when there WEREN'T dirt bikes and cruisers and touring bikes.....you bought a BIKE and made it do what you wanted it to do....

Lou Barlow did this with the band dinosaur jr. but they tend to blow speakers live. I know marshall sells ported 4x12's

i've often run a 100 watt Marshall thru one or two 4x12 marshall cabs, and while it does sound pretty cool, there's no real low end to speak of below 250Hz.

i run a marshall 2x12 as my bottom cab and a gk 4x10 on top and it sounds gangsta!!!

The Marshall 4x12 was originally intended as a bass cab. Since the 25 watt Celestions used were guitar drivers it was less than stellar in the low end, but the same applied to the original SVT, and for that matter most bass cabs of that period.
If this cab is loaded with guitar drivers it will work, with a vintage, ie., thin bottom, tone. With even moderate power the drivers will distort. Guitar players want that, bass players not so much.

The first real bass amp I used was a 50 watt Marshall and 4-12 cabinet from the '60s. Sounded great.

Yes i use a Marshall VBC 4x12 , loads of power right through the range , awesome cab.

I love the sound of a Marshall (real) valve/tube guitar head, with the gain structure set appropriately, as a Bass amp. A 4 x 12 300w Celestion-loaded cab sounds o.k. up to a not-so-loud volume...

But it's a very specific sound - not very versatile.

before I had an actual bass amp, I used to run my bass thru a 50 watt Marshall JMP and Slanted 4x12 cab. Sounded pretty good from what I remember and it definitely beat out the stereo with studio monitors I was using before that. Of course, don't expect that low end rumble like you would from a bona fide bass amp/cab.

Oh yeah, one time a band I was in played a show in Seattle and I got to use this sick Marshall bass rig. It was one of the best bass tones I've ever heard. One day... one day...

Just for fun we put my bass into the guitard's Marshall 100W and quad many years back. It was anaemic but we didn't try too hard for fear of damaging the speakers. Horses for courses.
