Anyone stuck in the midwestern blizzard?

Live in Howell County, MO...extreme south central part of the state....next county south is Arkansas ;). So far just a dusting of snow but really wild T-storms late last night and 50-60 MPH winds with lots of rain. Tonight, still very windy and temps are dropping like a stone. Supposed to be below zero Fahrenheit Sunday night but back to relatively mild temps Tuesday or Wednesday.

I miss midwestern snows. I live briefly in Fargo/Moorhead. My Twin Cities and Western Wisconsin relatives and friends are still waiting for snow to come.

We have a lot of snow in northern New Mexico. It was 9 last night at my house just north of Albuquerque-- this is a desert - southern state WTH. We had a white New Year.

Around thanksgiving, me and the wife did multi day overland driving and disperse camping, staying only on forest roads as much as possible and tent camping in freezing and sometimes snowing weather. 120+ miles of fire and forest roads - and wilderness beauty

Sketchy to no cell service.

For New Year, we went to a hike-in hot spring in Jemez Valles Calderas. But to even get there, we drove through 5 miles of un plowed cliffside fire road. Even the paved road was even a bear to drive. We do not have a lot of plows and anything outside a city or ski area will be plowed last if at all. Chains, a winch and a chainsaw were our only assurance. 25 year old stock truck - just heat and keys, manual and transfer case and no electronic assistance of any kind- We used paper maps from the forest service and relied on my tiny Garmin watch for GPS. We upgraded our old camping gear -- really works but they cost a fortune . Honestly my wife is better at this outdoor camping than me. Our dog was in heaven and so were we. The star lights reflected on the snow was awesome. No need for flashlights. They have closed the forest roads and won't be open till spring, so that was a really cool experience for us.


The left side is a sheer cliff (300 ft or so) - those are the top of the trees and it is just sheet ice on that road, so we just let the truck walk on 4L This was a safe place to take a photo. What helped was we had 1/2 cord of logs in the back as they allow you to harvest fallen wood and that helped some with traction.

My wife grew up in Van Buren, MO (off Hwy 60 in Carter Co) and I have visited many times, floating and fishing the Current River with my BiL's. As a Chicago guy, it always felt super rural to me ... but the home folks were always friendly, even if I could not always understand them ;)

But the panic is already in full effect. Went to do my usual Friday grocery run and it looked like it does when a hurricane is bearing down on the northern gulf coast. No bread or milk or much of anything, and the store looked like someone turned it upside down and shook it, stuff everywhere. I guess you can’t panic shop without picking up everything in the store then dropping it in random places.
It was the same when I went to get a bottle filled for my gas grill. I went to the nearest TSC and waited in line behind one guy with 17 small (20 lb) tanks and another guy with 9. I was the only one with a single tank in the entire queue.
Temp just dropped below freezing and we are looking at nights in the teens and daytime highs in the middle 30’s for the next seven days. The highest temp I saw on the 7 day forecast was 47. It should be an interesting week. :D

The weather in Iowa is a bit harsh right now. On top of the snow, the temps are predicted to get to -20 F here over the next 24 - 48 hours. With the wind, the chill factor will be around -40 F. This is the kind of weather where it literally hurts to be outside.

But, it's Iowa and it's winter. Most of us prepare for it, hunker down until it passes, and we get through it. It's what we do. My mom used to say, "It builds character ".

Did nine years in Eastern Iowa. Lots of snow for a native Texan. Just signed on a house in KC area a few weeks ago. Not looking forward to the snow, but with no job (yay) it's not as much of a concern. And THE SIDEWALK IS ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STREET! Hooray.

Van Buren is nice. So is the current river! :cool:

I stocked up on necessaries so I wouldn't have to go out, but the predicted snow accumulation for my area in the middle of MO fizzled. We didn't get enough to actually cover the ground. I almost busted my butt a couple of times on the ice, but I stayed up! Ah, the good old winter wonderland. Coincidentally, I am also waiting on an amp to be delivered. :)

Great picture! Please send some to New England. We've had 7" of rain this last week eliminating the little snow cover we had.

Went to bed last night it was 38F at 7:30am it was 50!!!! ***, where's winter?

I live in the Chicago area. A foot of snow? Yeah, it’s a bit of an inconvenience, but we know how to deal with it. One of the places I wanted to go yesterday was closed, but most stuff was open and operating just fine. A 2 foot snow, which we get every 5 years or so - that’s where things get stalled for a while.

Yeah, and this too will pass. Always seems like one week a winter is like this, and then back to normal.
