Anyone tried DR. Marcus Miller fat beams on a stingray 5 ?

Has anyone tried DR. Marcus Miller fat beams on a stingray 5 ?

Did they sound okay?

was the B floppy?

what was the good and or bad about them on a stingray 5?

Well. can't help you with the 5, but I use Fatbeams on my MM's and they are totally awesome! I was a long time Hi-Beam user and loved those, then I went to Circle K's and still use those on some basses, but for the MM's it is the Fatbeams all the way. Super even, not as bright as the Hi-Beams and more midrange punch and grit which ,for me and most people, is what MM's are all about to begin with anyway...

Fat Beams are one of the best DR strings with the SunBeams IMO.
Very great sound, great feel, good mids and classy highs.
Great for fingerstyle and pick, and of course for slap too. But don't expect to have the Miller sound.

No I'm not looking for the marcus miller sound, I just keep hearing good things about them and I've never heard them on a stingray 5 before.

Part of the issue is that I don't pay for my strings, the people I play for buy them for me, but only from the local guitar center, and guitar center keeps on changing the strings they stock, and they only carry a few brands that I trust.

The 1 thing that I've notice is that they always seem to be carrying the dr marcus miller strings, so I figure if I like these I will stay with them because they always have them in stock, if it was up to me I would get DR low riders or high beams but they stopped stocking them.

So that is why I want to get an opinion on how they sound on this type of bass guitar.

Thanks for your input so far ,it's making me feel better about getting them, but then again I've never played any dr's that were bad.

I had the four string set on my old Yamaha BB413. I agree with everything Nightvision said. I used it finger style, the tone was amazing, cut through the mix great.

that is awesome, and that is exactly what I want to do, cut through the mix, that is why I love the stingray 5 so much.

well.. I hated em.. but I dont like DRs Ive discovered. I play a Stingray 4. DR's sound kinda hollow in the mids to me.

I don't use Fatbeams but I do use Sunbeams.

I had'em on my SR5. Sounded great and they felt good, nothing was floppy at all. I switched to Dunlops after years of being a DR guy. They feel better to me and sound just as good IMO and for less then half the price. Even if I didn't have to pay for my strings I would still stick with the Dunlops.

honestly I always thought that dunlop strings were crap by what I heard from people, but the guys at guitar center say they are awesome and are starting to sell really well, I am not sure if they are paid to push the strings or are really telling the truth, but they do always have them in stock, I will have to try a set of those one of these days.

I tried to like DR FatBeams on my Stingray. I love them on my Bongo, however I've actually been very happy with the cheap ol'e Ernie Ball Super Slinkies on my Stingray more than anything else, they settle in quite nicely. That said, I already have some Circle K strings on the way.

Maybe you prefer the midrange response of other strings, but DR makes so many different strings with different types of mids that I find it hard to believe that they ALL sound hollow in the mids. I can believe that about Hi Beams for sure, though. But, Lo-Riders and Sunbeams have mids aplenty. Guess it just depends on what you're looking for.

For the OP...I've got Fat Beams on my Jazz, which has nothing to do with a SR5 and my only advice would be to get the .130 instead of the .125 for the low B. I think the .125 a little too light on a 34" scale and really doesn't match up tension-wise with the rest of the set (.045-.105). The .130 is a much better match IMO. Other than that, there isn't much I can tell you except that I really like them.
