Anyone tried the JoeMeek FloorQ?

Hi guys.
Been on this forum for quite awhile now. Just have not posted anything.

So here's the first.

Anybody tried the JoeMeek FloorQ?

How does this compare to many of the compressors on the market.
I've got my eyes on either this or the Diamond Bass Compressor.

Thanks guys.

I can't directly answer your question (yet), but if you read the reviews linked in my sig for the Diamond CPR-1 and the Joemeek MC2, it will give you an idea of what to expect. Joemeek says the FloorQ is the guts of the MC2, in mono, in a pedal.

I have and use a Joe Meek FloorQ. I was happy to see the Joe Meek compressor in a pedal form, as I have several VC1Q mic pres that I used on bass for long time. I am very happy with the FloorQ. It has the JM sound, big, full and adjustable. It has plenty of controls available, and does get punchy. Of course with more controls, you need to be a little more patient, tweak and listen. I also have a Trace Elliot dual SMX compressor, Aphex punch factory, Demeter Compulator and EHX Soul Preacher. Each compressor has it's own voice and attitude, and to me a particular time for it's use. I mainly use the FloorQ in the studio and rehearsals at home. It does not run on batteries. However, you can just about plug any adapter in regardless of polarity and it will work. I wish the labeling on the front panel indicated real values. Such as the controls are labeled 1 to 10. No actual indication of value the control adjusts (attack, release, slope). Just tweak and listen, and as they always say, if it sounds good.... it is. To compare to other compressors that I have, I like single knob compressors also, set, forget, easy to setup and go. I use those for subtle taming or when playing a gig. Just set and go, as I usually don't have alot of time to setup and discern several controls. I have alot to contend with and remember, as it depends which bass I am playing (out of 14 basses, all have different controls to remember), which rig (out of several) and all react different upon combination of bass, preamp, amp, cab and venue. Simplicity has it's benefits and is underrated. The JM is nice because you can dial in what you want. The single knob comps, may give up a bit, squash a bit too much on peaks or not enough, or just not react evenly across the fretboard. That's where the JM or even possibly the Trace comes in. I too am interested in the Diamond Bass Comp, and the FEA Labs and the Demeter Comp Pro, with attack and release etc. etc.. The lists goes on and on. I was so close to buying an FEA, then went and played through my rig and all my compressors, and came to the reality, I really do have the compression thing covered..... for now, we'll see about tomorrow....... Thanks guys..
I'm leaning towards the FloorQ more because of its controls. Having used studio compressors for awhile, I'm pretty alright at tweaking the ratio, attack, release, threshold, etc. So the FloorQ looks like it'll fit my needs. And it could sit in my studio as part of the chain when tracking guitars and basses.
Wonder how it compares to the Keeley 4 knob version? Any ideas Bongomania.

Where did you get yours Lapicide?

The Keeley loses lows, and is a bit noisier, and is less versatile. On the plus side, the Keeley does have some really nice tone fattening in the mids and high mids, that may sound better to some people than the Joemeek.

Hmm. I think I'll go for the JoeMeek. Now its time to fund for it, and order it!

Thanks Bongo! And it must be amazing being able to try out most or all the compressors on the market.

Hope someone does it for other effects. Fuzzes, distortions, chorus, etc.
I would love to do that. hahaha! Well, that's a dream.

TBH between the Joemeek and the Markbass, I think they will be serious competitors, without one being "obviously" better than the other. I don't yet know how the construction quality and the bypass quality on the Joemeek are, so that's one factor to consider for sure.

The Joemeek will have more of a colored tone, but not by a huge margin. Their "action" is kind of similar, though I recall the Joemeek having a bit more extreme envelope shape. (Referring of course to the MC2)

One of the moderators here, grygrx, has a fuzz-review website,

The FloorQ is solid like a tank, no fears here. Bypass is clean, no coloration. Interesting thing on the bypass is that the input control is always active, even when bypassed. with a range from 0 to 20db to match a wide variation in levels between guitars and amps......Lapicide

Heard about the input control.

So now, which to buy. Both looks very good. Specs wise.
And I don't have the cash to buy both and figure out which sounds nicer to my ears. And over where I live. I doubt any dealers are gonna be bringing in either of these. So there is no testing in the shops.

DANGG!

so it's f-cking awesome. it tends to change the tone of the bass as you tweak it. almost like an EQ and comp. i'm not too familiar with comps but i always thought they didn't affect EQ that much.
i can get a nice pumping punchy agressive growl with this thing and slapping is now something i'm more keen on because it sounds so good. i've just been playing my aria integra through it. i'm going to try my zon BG now..

I have been doing all my live work through an old Line6 analog (nothing near their advanced electronics) compressor and noise gat combo. Its served well for well over a decade but developing a crackle. I have a Meek FloorQ that I have used in the house that is clearly the superior compressor, I just used the other one because of its simplicity and the fact it was still nailing a killer sound for me. My Meek has had a set and forget existence in the house (meaning I have gotten a bit out of touch on how to use the controls) but I need to very much experiment to get that perfect bass sound from it out an amp like I do with it indoors, all I know so far is its not the same settings. I favor a very clean and punchy tone with prominent overtones. I use an Alembic bass through it into an SWR Redhead (tube pre) combo. Anyone that cares to make suggestions on settings to try is welcome here.

The Floor Q is an amazing, full-featured comp. I owned both it and the Diamond. The Diamond is also very good but more coloured and less tweakable....a different beast with it's own simple but effective tilt eq. The only downsides to the Floor Q are its' large size and 18V power supply. If those won't bug you, it's superb.
