I had an ashdown mag 180 for a while. It was fine, nothing exceptional. I put it up for sale as I found other gear I liked better
I'll take a crack at it. I'm not an expert on electronics and speakers, and there are guys on the list who are, and hopefully they'll correct me if I'm wrong
Here's the deal--you need to know the ohm rating of your cabs. The mag 300 head can run a minimum load of 4 ohms--no less. If you hook a 4 ohm cab to the head, that's it, you can't add any additional cabs.
But if you have a single 8 ohm cab, you can add a second 8 ohm cab--two 8 ohm cabs together will show the amp a 4 ohm load.
For example, I have a 4 ohm 2x 12 cab--you could use that. I also have two 8 ohm, single speaker cabs--I can use both those 8 ohm cabs, because when they are linked, the amp "sees" 4 ohms. But I could not use a 4 ohm cab, and an 8 ohm cab together--that would bring the impedance down to less than 4 ohms. I could not use three eight ohm cabs either, for the same reason.
So check the rating on the cabs you want to use. 2 eight ohm cabs =4 ohms.
As to the wattage, you can use the 307 watt amp with a cab rated for 450, and you should be fine. But you can still blow speakers. Speakers usually blow when A: the cone of the speaker is forced beyond its range by some big spike in volume, or B: the voice coil, the thing that translates the signal into speaker movement, overheats and distorts or actually melts
As I understand it, you should be pretty safe witha 307 watt amp into a cab rated for 400 watts. But if you send a the wrong kind of signal--say, a really distorted , heavily effected signal--you could oveheat the voice coil and blow the speaker. In my opinion--and again, I'm not an expert--you'll be fine if you don't constantly push the amp to its extremes
As to volume, it's hard to give a clear answer about what's louder. Cabs all have different efficiency ratings. Some aree louder than others, some sound louder than others but maybe aren't, because the emphasize different frequencies. For example, you can make a cab louder by sacrificing some low end. Generally, more speakers equals a louder and fuller sound. But it depends on a bunch of different things
