Anything blatantly wrong with this?

Here is my work-up of the first bass I'm going to build. It's based off the one of my Stambaugh's. I haven't laid the pick-ups or knobs out yet and the head stock is a little weird (drew it as if it was flat rather than angled so it won't be so large plus I need to shift the tuner holes up a bit and closer to the edges). It is going to be 35" and neck through the body.

Is there something blatantly wrong with this mock up before I get started? Anything I'm missing?

Thanks. This is just an Illustrator tracing of the photo of the pencil drawing. I have the measurements on the master...I keep double checking them like crazy...as if they might have moved.

Id put the volute right down the nut where the angled headstock breaks.

And double- & triple-checking is a good thing.
I see nothing 'wrong'- I prefer bolt-on & 34" but the overall design looks very nice.

Yeah, I just moved here from Brooklyn, NY. When I'm done with this build you can come evalute it It's gonna take a while though. I will be using the shop tools at work, which means after work building for me. Once I start it I'll make a post.

Id put the volute right down the nut where the angled headstock breaks.

I thought so too. The original had it in this location, but I think I'll shift it aft as recommended.

I would smooth out the neck to body transition, but that's up to you. Looks good though!

your neck needs angled back to accommodate bridge height and provide the correct action and amount of ajustability, that and align your d-string tuner so the string clears the g-string one

oh... and I'd move the tuner holes north a bit so you don't t have the chance of having the screws for the low and hi string tuners sticking out into thin air, since you'll probably be carving that transition from the neck to the headstock.

Here are updated e-drawings with major measurements. There are plenty more, but the drawing was getting crowded.

Thirsty and Funky: I have a 2 degree angle drawn. Very hard to see by the image. I was going to verify this angle once I had the bridge, strings, nut, etc to physically mock-up. Would it be better to figure this out before hand?

Hoyt: I agree with moving the tuners. I was going to adjust when I had the hardware. Again, maybe better to figure this out before hand.

That's what I do: get the hardware I want and then reference it against the build drawings ( or a lot of time in my case.....) draw them out on the headstock and drill away...




good to see you doing the right thing re: permissions. while imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, it can also be called ripping someone off IF the intent is to change a couple of small details and call it your design. that's clearly not your intention, so I'll shut up now
