ok i've never built a bass from a lump of wood up but i have proformed 2 fretted to fretless conversions
created a frankenbass that required routing a neck pocket and bridge cavity not to mention rewiring and painting
custom painted 4 bass's
repaired damage on the bodys of 2 guitars
and i do the setups and maintanence of all the band's instruments

can i have a *gave it his best and failed* membership? :hiding:

i don't know if i count. i most of the hard, time consuming work at home, like carving contures, planning, templates, routering, at home, but since there is a limited amount of tools at home, i have to do some work, like precision cutting cuting and sanding edges on things like body and fingerboard, most gluing, planing, drilling, and other things

Are those hipshot bridges? I used them on my first bass... Never again. The cheap ebay ones are a lot easier to mount, and I'm not a big fan of through-body strings.

To each it's own- I find that the Hipshot single string thru-body bridge contributes greatly to the tone & sustain, which is awesome on both these basses. Think about it - the strings thru the body allows them to couple more with the wood of the body. It's just the laws of physics at work here. Just to learn- what kind of problem did you have with the Hipshot?

I didn't really have any major problems with them. They worked as intended, I just don't think it's worth the extra money/effort compared to the cheapies.

I think ordinary mounting provides more than adequate coupling, and it doesn't kink the strings at a 70 degree angle like those bridges do if you string through body.

The bolt through the body's a bit excessive. I suppose you don't have to worry about rounded/broken screw heads or stripped threads, which can sometimes be a problem with the screws that come with the cheap knockoff hardware. It's a nice feature, but does add a fair bit of extra work to deal with the extra holes needed on the back of the bass.

The biggest 2 things though, are the silly oval protrusion on the bottom which you need to route an extra hole for (quite precisely), and the price.

I can buy a full set of the cheapies for the price of a single hipshot, and save myself all the extra hassle.

I don't think anyone will hear a difference.
