Apparent Serial Killer in Flint

^That's some seriously morbid knowledge...

Although I will admit to reading and having an interest in serial killers (although an aversion to slasher type movies such as the SAW series) it only takes an inquisitive mind to find such information.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_serial_killers_by_country

Serial Killers have some sort of pathology that revolves around hatred,...be that of members of the opposite sex,...other races and religions, homosexuals or their own self loathing (a lot of times because the killer is he or herself a homosexual). I would not be at all surprised if the killer in Flint cops to racial motivations for his crimes; once he's caught.

That said I still find the flip flop "...if it were a black man..." comment in the linked article to be somewhat inflammatory and simply untrue. Sure there are instances of racial bias and prejudice in the media (all the more reason why I don't pay much attention to the media) but this particular comment seems tacked on for dramatic effect.

EDIT: I agree with Mike in that at any one time there are numerous active serial killers, possibly hundreds (actual stats are hard to come by which is why I'm hesitant to go there) but with the exception of Robert Lee Yates here and the DC Sniper and currently the killer in Flint,...I've not been made aware via mainstream media of any current serial killer activity.

makes perfect sense to me - this killer hasn't received national acclaim because he doesn't have a fancy moniker like "son of sam" or he's not dressed like a clown, or the killings aren't gruesome enough. once they get a moniker it's all over. on another note, in general, my theory is that serial killings don't happen as often as they used to because of the highly evolved DNA evidence investigation tactics. more common has been the "blow your wad in one shot then blow yourself away" surburban family slayings and disgruntled workers.
Ebodious - I live fairly close to dorothea puente's old house. I would have totally bought it if it was on the market when I was ready to buy (and dug around for more skulls too). :) yeah I'm sick, I know

I agree with you. Serial killers are more common than most realize, and they are usually under the radar because what they do does not follow any rational pattern.

also.. this is happening in flint. If this were say greenwich, CT that would be a different matter. I remember living in San Jose, and they'd report stabbings in Oakland in the same breath as a notification that the post office would be closed on wednesday. :hmm:

if all the victims are old black men, i think its hard to argue that there is no racial element to the story.

Not necessarily.

While I agree there likely is a racial component - given the racial/age demographics of the area in question, it may just be a "victim of opportunity" thing.

Like sometimes serial killers kill prostitutes for various psychological reasons, and sometime they kill prostitutes just because they're easy targets.

I suspect that the racial element is tough to prove at this time. It's not like he's leaving racial messages , etc. One of his attacks was a white male, and if you look at the demographics of Flint, and the fact that he prays on men who are alone, the fact that he attacked one white male and (I believe) 11 black males is not out of line. I'm sure that the population on the streets alone males in many neighborhoods of Flint is about 11 to 1 black men verses white men. African Americans have higher unemployment and Flint has real high unemployment. The unemployment rate for black males in Flint is 25.3%.

While I can agree with the last part of this quote I find the bold text to be a little sensationalized. There are a lot of serial killers that probably only go noticed in local and regional media but probably never made it to the "top of the news cycle" until they were caught.

Overlooking the late 19th and early 20th century dates,....how many of these people have you actually heard of?

The bolded ones. Some of the others I faintly remember reading about, but didnt know them offhand by name. Though, Im probably an exception to the rule, as I have a facination with serial killers and sociopaths.

Dr. H. H. Holmes is one of my favorites to read about. Also, though not really a serial killer kind of thing, I went and visited the Wonderland house in Hollywood Hills. It was for rent at the time, and a friend of mine and I almost moved in...almost*.

*rent was too high

Dr. Cheese, I think I figured out why your threads turn into race threads. You get at least some of your news from obviously race based sources, ie theroot.com and black spin, to name a few right off the top of my head. If the first article on a particular web site is "the blackest white folks we know", I would imagine the source loses its credibility with some people.

The reason Cheese's threads become race threads is because 9/10 threads he posts have race involved in some way that allows the reader to identify possible racial implications/motives in the original article. Thuthfully, I cannot think of many OT threads he posts that AREN'T in reference to race in some way.
