Have been playing upright for 20 years. You probably ought to have noticed that I have a Phd in music. I have taught jazz studies for a time at university and will waltz into any forum I wish to with greater credentials than you and a hatred of musical snobbery.
The best revenge is success. Either the op tries his best or changes his degree. How many degree course programmed have you written?
This post is trolling, plain and simple. An academic snob lecturing what he perceives to be double bass snobs. And of all people to accuse of this, you chose Marcus, who actively gigs on both basses and has for 20 years? Seriously? There are at least four professors of jazz double bass who post on this site, and none wave their credentials around in this manner. Not coincidentally, all of them post under their own names as well.
I think we all need to stop the e-pudenda waving right now and ask ourselves what we are really doing here at this point. The OP seems to have disappeared. Are we really "helping" him by questioning each others credentials? I think not. If the OP wants to play only BG, he should go to a school that's designed for that. At my school, we require all jazz majors to focus on DB while studying for their degree because that skill is what is called for in most jazz bands. People who double are encouraged to do so when the material being played calls for it. If somebody came to UofL and said they only wanted to play BG, I would try to help them find a place to do that where they could be happy. And if we're really trying to help this person, that would be a useful way to do it.
I think there's a lot to be said for trying to foster an appreciation for the DB in jazz, and anyone who teaches the instrument these days has to do a fair amount of that, especially as many younger students are not aware of so much that has been done, or of the history of the instrument or the music itself. I also believe there comes a point where if a student doesn't want to play the instrument, they should admit that and go somewhere where they can follow their passion in an environment that's designed for that. Whether our OP has reached or surpassed that point is something none of us knows, and perhaps will never know. I do see a lot of people trying to help, though. As long as that's the focus of what's going on here, that's fine. If it turns into a urination contest about credentials, then I'll have no choice but to close it or start handing out infractions for disrespect, which I am not fond of doing.
